Guy and Laura Waterman article on Winter travel above treeline

A very well written article that everyone interested in winter hiking should read. I've read it elsewhere, but I can't remember where- perhaps it was republished in one of their books?

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

Kind of. It does connect NY with VT (as well as QC, NH, and ME), but it's Northern Vermont, and yeah, it skirts up through Canada to get around the north end of the Green Mountains. It gets fairly close to the LT, but there's no direct link. Some outfitters in QC that would probably help you...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

It's too bad Vermont rejected the North Country Trail. The original plan was that the eastern terminus would be at a junction with the Long Trail. Vermont said that they didn't want another national scenic trail, though, so the NCT is going to end at Crown Point in NY instead. If the Long...

    Death on Mount Washington

Unfortunately, probably very few. I see lots of hikers who seem to carry them because they look cool. I've also witnessed a lot of improper ice-ax use here in the Adirondacks. It doesn't take long to learn how to use an ax properly, but it is important that everyone who carries one do so...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

Nice... I helped replace the bog bridging on the portage between Attean and Holeb Ponds this summer... Last summer I helped to install the wood stair cases at the access/portage at Spencer Rips... You probably saw some of our work!

    Whisperlights in Winter

The pop noise was probably air escaping from the fuel bottle- and in doing so, knocking the o-ring back into place. It's definitely not a bad idea to grease and/or replace your o-rings every so often. If your stove is older (and it sounds like it is), this might help to rejuvenate it for winte...

    sled/pulk/rooftop storage combo design

I bet you'd get it to work great behind a snowmobile- but I think you'd have problems trying to pull it yourself in deep snow. those cartop carries are definitely wider than the average packed out snowshoe, and you're going to end up wasting a lot of energy trying to drag it though a snow...

    Must Be a Story Here?!

I don't think they left it there intentionally... I think they tried to use it as a weight to throw a bear rope up there, intending to recover the mirror once the rope was secure. Unfortunately, the rope, and the mirror, got stuck (25 feet off the ground according to the original post!). The...

    Must Be a Story Here?!

Believe me, a lot of people can't go without having a mirror. Stereotypical to say, yes, but a lot of women are uncomfortable being in the woods for an extended period of time without one. Think along the lines of girlfriend or wife that has been dragged into the woods at the insistence of...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

If you could snap your fingers, and instantly have a long distance trail come into being, what would it be? Doesn't matter if it's a hiking or a paddling trail. Can be as well developed as you want, as difficult as you'd like it to be, and traveled by as many people or as few people as you...

Map that shows forested cover in the US

I think the gray areas are just places with little or no woody vegetation- the extreme low end of the scale. They correspond pretty well with the plains areas in the mid-west, and desert areas in the west.

    Must Be a Story Here?!

I would bet that it is someone's bear hang attempt. Even though the canisters have been required for 6 years now in the Adirondacks, you still see plenty of bear hang graveyards in the vicinity of lean-tos and campsites... little bits of rope, tangled up and caught high in the trees. This...

New multi-use trail segment to cost $83/inch

Well, remember- this trail, when completed, is going to run right smack through the center of Condord, NH, which is a pretty heavily urbanized area. A wide paved trail makes sense in this situation for a variety of reasons. Visually, the paved trail is unlikely to have a huge impact. It'd be...

Map that shows forested cover in the US

I figured a lot of people here would find this interesting. http://www.businessinsider.com/this-map-shows-where-all-the-trees-are-in-the-us-2012-1 Definitely hones in on how important the northeastern forest (NY and New England) are to biodiversity in the US... Also makes it pretty obvious...

New multi-use trail segment to cost $83/inch

It's great to hear about hard work going into greenways in more urbanized areas. :)

    Sewards Gate?

Right, those posts were about the gate getting closed for mud season in spring. :) The question was about the gate getting closed in winter... which I'm not sure it ever was for the past few winters (maybe it was, but not for extended periods of time) (again we're talking winter, not spring...

    Sewards Gate?

Haha, why did you just state that you'd seen the gate closed in previous winters? Would've prevented some confusion... ;)

    Sewards Gate?

Trip report over on ADK High Peaks indicates that the gate on the road is now closed: http://forums.adkhighpeaks.com/showthread.php?t=16591 Guess I was incorrect about it being left open all winter. :)

Do we have a darwin award thread yet?

You have to either die or be rendered sterile to win a darwin award. The whole idea behind the award is that your stupidity is stupid enough that you prevent yourself from passing on your stupid genes. That way, the human species evolves to be smarter because of you. Hence, "Darwin" award...
