Zealand Road trailhead > Sawyer River Road backpack (8/5-8/7/2018)

Four of us spent 2 nights backpacking from Zealand Road to Sawyer River Road from Sunday 8/5/2018-Tuesday 8/7/2018. Here was our general route (FYI - I'm not including every single trail in this): Zealand trailhead > spur to Zealand Falls Hut > Ethan Pond Trail > spur to Thoreau Falls > Ethan...

Trail Maintenance Monies Heading to the White Mountains

This will likely be offset by a decrease in base funding to the WMNF unfortunately. The latest Trump budget calls for massive funding cuts to agencies that manage federal public lands.

Done. Thanks for keeping the site going, Tim.

Wyoming - GTNP, Yellowstone, Wind River Range

My favorite part of Yellowstone is parking at Old Faithful and walking all 6-8+ miles of trails that stem from there in Upper Geyser Basin (including across the park road to visit other areas so you don't have to try to park at them). The variety of thermal features is absolutely incredible -...

    New Vermont Hut System

It will be very interesting to see how this progresses. I am personally a big fan of huts, so long as they are kept relatively cheap so that all can afford to enjoy them. And if this movement ultimately leads to more conservation areas with more trails, I'm all for it. I just joined them as a...

Best Cities To Work And Live For Hiking

It's getting expensive, but I personally think St. George Utah is the best base camp in the USA. It's only a few hours to places like the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Zion National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante (my favorite place on the planet), skiing in northern Utah, Capitol Reef, Kanab, Bryce...

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Are you sure you can only hack 4 days? The southwest is amazing and has a lifetime of world-class hikes (I'm not exaggerating). If you only have 4 days, here is what I would recommend ~ fly into Las Vegas ~ head straight to Valley of Fire State Park, which is pretty much on the way to Zion...

    Katahdin bushwhack regs

I’d love to see some pics of Katahdin Falls if somebody ends up bushwhacking that side of Katahdin.

    Northern Pass approved

This is what happens when you vote republican. It hasn’t always been that way but that’s how it seems to be now. This forum is no place for politics but conservation is something all voters should be factoring in.

Mass. man drowns in Franconia Brook

I was actually there yesterday. I was swimming a few hours earlier and although the water level was moderate, nobody was really struggling with it. I wonder where he tried to go in? Certainly not the upstream pool or the pool below the water chute.

    Direttissima in Backpacker magazine

I laughed at that as well. Backpacker actually reached out to me for a pic of the falls but eventually used a photo of something else. Kinda glad they didn't highlight the falls further with that misinformation included. Their fact checking is quite bad these days.

    K2 in Winter

My favorite part of the article: "he (Janusz Golab) has children and at least one girlfriend" Excellent article all around though.

    Agassiz basin/falls & indian leap

I'm not sure what happened, but they are both gone. On a side note, I'd love to see this spot eventually get added to the WMNF....probably dreaming here though

North Kinsman via Mt. Kinsman Trail - Sunday 3/19/2017

One person had hiked up this trail on Saturday but 4 of us finished the job breaking the trail out on Sunday. We found excellent snowshoeing conditions from start to finish. Snowshoes will still needed on this trail until 5-10 more people pack down the trail a little bit more. All stream...

Overflowing barrel of poop at Madison Hut

A friend of mine worked at Lakes of the Clouds Hut and said that some of the waste used to "sneak" into the Ammonoosuc. AMC might want to tighten some processes.

    Looking: Southern Maine Hiking Suggestions

Not sure if you'd call it hiking or not, but have you walked the Marginal Way from Perkins Cove to Ogunquit? Crowded as all heck, but it's a must (do it first thing in the AM). Also do the short walk to Cascade Falls in Saco, although it may not be flowing all that well since we haven't had...
