If you could hike with a historical figure who would it be?

It would be cool to hike Mt Washington with George Washington..... maybe ski or ride Tux, too, while we're at it!!! :)

Sledding on Trails - Is it Reckless?

Considering that there are several thousand happy people sliding one way or another down into Tuckerman Ravine thru some NARROW rock walls and over the *actual* Tuckerman Ravine Trail on a fine Spring day, I would say it would be crazy *NOT* to do the same!!! :D

    Anyone have ACL issues?

Gosh - such a heartbreaking story!!!!! I'm sure all of us avid hikers can feel for you!!!! Many of us have had what seemed like season/etc-ending injuries as you, though, many not as severe. However, keep in mind that there are many hikers out there (on this board even) who have had...

chain of ponds around Thoreau Falls?

never heard of the Chain of Ponds in there... and I've been there a lot, but, sometimes my mind drifts..... :) BUT, maybe they should have a general sign saying, "Chain of swamps" - as, other than the trail, it's pretty swampy all through those woods!!!!!

Ski/Shoe/Binding Combo most like a sliding snowshoe

I tried an equivalent "sliding snowshoe" - fat/short ski with built-in skins and bindings to fit winter boots. On Road portion of Gale River Trail up to the first water crossing (very close to summer trailhead) - VERY inefficient!!! Didn't really fit my big winter boot so I had to kludge it...

Backpacking Thoreau Falls / Shoal Pond

Trails will be relatively easy to follow though downed leaves may obscure the footway. However, Shoal Pond Trail has many many VERY wet sections typical of wilderness terrain. Those will probably NOT be frozen so you may want to re-think it this time of year, especially when the weather has...

Do you use NNN BC ?

I switched *from* NNN BC due to icing about 6 miles into the Pemi wilderness (several times) - VERY scary trying to *** the ice out while your fingers are effing freezing!!! And then being afraid I'd get stranded... could not close them!!! I use BC70's (BC65's were too narrow for me - I sold...

New Wind Farm in Berlin - Under the radar

if you want to see what mountain-top-like removal looks like, check out Jericho Mountain - I hiked it a couple months ago. Not too far away is Cambridge Black - pretty similar destruction/clearcutting/blasting.

    wannabe the first?

ummmmmm a little above my pay grade ;) I've set my sights a little lower: A first for me would be starting and ending winter with no new injuries.

dry river status? Reopened as of 9/25/2014

I just got an update from a good source: The Saco Ranger District is preparing a press release... Also, separately, concerning the upper stretch - "The upper stretch of blowdowns was punched through." - presumably excellent ax-work!!! :)

dry river status? Reopened as of 9/25/2014

We did the middle section last month - here's that report - http://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=17730 Last year when I did the section up to Lakes of the Clouds, it was a blowdown $hit$how. I cannot imagine those being cleared out without mechanized firepower...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

I, for one, think it's nice when I get to a summit and find an actual sign (many of which are/were historic if they haven't been "stolen") or a label on a canister (if there is one, or a pillbox, or whatever) so I know I found the correct summit. I don't copy tracks on a GPS so I do use old...
