North Moat Mountain
May 18, 2012
Diana's Baths trailhead in No. Conway -> Red Ridge Trail -> clockwise to North Moat Summit -> down Moat Mountain Trail.
Trail conditions: Very good overall; the flat sections at beginning/end were even fairly runnable. Water crossings were not too bad, one...
Seems like all the trail ultrarunners around here swear by the Nathan race vests. Even if you are "only" doing shorter runs, (as if a 20 mile trail run in the Whites is an "only"!) that kind of thing would probably come in pretty handy. Keeps everything form jostling around.
Also, the shell...
Sounds wonderful, Arm. Great report and photos, and nice shout out to Spirit Family Reunion too. :) I must do a trip like this someday. Man, the Travelers in winter! Want!! (PS, You people are hella tough, that's some swell terrain.)
I have been using Microspikes for trail running on pretty hilly/icy terrain and been really happy with them. No slipping even on glare ice. Significant steepness plus glare ice is an issue for them though. But that's when you'd want to wear crampons anyway.
I live ~3 hours drive away, so it is really helpful to have leads to potentially good places from people who know the area better than I do.
Thanks everyone for all the ideas!
The Moats sound like a great idea! That might be perfect...
And I've never been on the Champney or Bolles Trails - only done Chocorua once actually and it was via something else - so I will have to check those out too.
And yes, it is certainly a rather open-ended/noob-ish question. I'm...
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. While it doesn't have to be a mountain, it'd be great if it was... Could be a little farther from No Conway if there's a great view and it's worth it! WOuld love to hear more suggestions as well. Thanks!!
Yep - soon. I figure with so little snowfall, there must be lower elevation stuff that is pretty decently packed and runnable. If it isn't packed enough, I'll just run in snowshoes so as not to posthole.
Never heard of the two places you mentioned, will give them a googling - thanks...
Where do you love to trail run? Can anyone suggest a cool loop trail run near Conway?
Doesn't need to be a mountain. Anything with variety is good. It does need to be something well marked/blazed. On the shorter side might be good since we are hoping to travel lightly and don't mind...
Great report and beautiful pic. My initial first reaction is basically: I want to be like you when I grow up. :)
Way to tough it out in the cold - sounds wonderful though. I adore the Goose Eye area and the allure/peace definitely resonates.
