    100 mile wilderness

Enjoy!! I fell in love with backpacking doing the 100 mile wilderness with my son in 1999 despite making plenty of mistakes and being hopelessly over-packed. I've been planning another trip and would definitely stay at Antlers again. I agree with GBKD on this campground. If you are still...

Black Flies - How bad are they?

Black flies were pretty bad (not miserable) on stretches of the Wapack yesterday.

    Wapack Trail - 5/21

8 of us hiked the trail North to South. We spotted a bail out/resupply car at the Temple Road lot (half watermelon in a cooler was a big hit). The trail was in very good condition. It was well marked. The re-route at Windblown is now seamless. A few small blow downs provided no problems...

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

I was totally blissing out about five few days into backpacking the New Hampshire AT (Grafton Notch to Norwich) when it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn't reached the Osgood cut off yet. Moments after I started looking for blazes and signs, I saw that I'd reached the 6 Husbands Trail and had...

    Scar Ridge - Sat., 5/21/11

I found this thread because I searched VFTT for Scar Ridge info while thinking about planning a trip there - but, I'm in the same position as Puck. I'd love to join you for the ridge-whack, but have already got a bunch of others committed to hiking Wapack with me that day. If dates change (or...

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

I can see the basis for that worry. Kim though, just gave this update (getting no response on the CTA bulleting board, I repeated it on The Friends of the Cohos Trail Facebook page, where he replied): "Just got off the phone with the power company. They will be working on a bypass trail for...

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

I learned a bit from from this thread and now from Kim, in response to my inquiry. He writes, "I would expect folks to pass almost directly under several of the towers."

    Mansfield Saturday and Mud Season

A hiker friend plans on hiking Mansfield Saturday. I assume this is the first day of mud-season. Given the snow still there, is there likely to be tolerance for hikers on the 16th? Does anyone know if it is, for practical purposes, mud season on any part of the trails around Mansfield?

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

You got me wondering NH, since I'm thinking hoping to hike the CT again this August - so I asked over on the CTA board. I'll report if I learn anything.

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

If no one here has current info, you might ask at the CTA forum: http://mtngoat2.proboards.com/index.cgi? Last I heard they were prepared for the possibility that around Baldhead - Dixville hikers would not be far from the turbines, but they weren't talking about a re-route. I assume this is...

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

There will be some shelter building this season and a bridge. I'm sure the folks in the CTA would love a chance to put your skills to use. It's really a small down to earth group - I keep being amazed by how much they have accomplished.

    Wool Mittens ?

I love my Dachstein Mitts (learned about them here a few years back) so now I'm wondering are the Dachstein socks suitable for winter hikes? Any experience with them?

    recent Thru-Hiker heroism saves life

Interesting question on the search Maddy. There was an earlier news article which also indicates that there was enough information to do a search (he'd filed an itinerary) - but gives no hint of an active search. Interestingly the article makes very little mention of the thru-hikers. I'd...

    Mid-State/Wapack Trail Question

Fees to hike the Long Trail!

I found this after hearing that the Long Trail Festival was cancelled and went to the GMC site hoping to see it was part of an April Fool's joke. Since this was the joke, I figure the festival really is cancelled.
