ouch

"Black flies are the bane of the north woods. They are found from approximately Massachusetts up to the Arctic Circle. Their season here in New Hampshire is mid May to early July. They hatch out of cool mountain streams, and are a creature of the mountains and forests, not as common near the seacoast or in urban areas. Although they are technically harmless, their bites can be extremely irritating, and cause blood to run down your skin. I've heard that in some parts of Canada they are so bad that they can almost cover exposed skin, and cause caribou to swim into lakes to get away from them. "

Ewwwww. Been there, done that. They really only get to me when they try to crawl inside every orifice on your body by the dozens. I made the mistake of taking my family on vacation in W. Maine in June. The littlest ones were crying, they wouldn't come out of the cabin. We ran to the car, jumped in and they kids wouldn't let me go until they spent five minutes killing every last one with the windows rolled up. My wife was none that happy either. Tried to escape them by paddling out to the middle of the lake. The buggers stayed with me! I learned my lesson. Never again in June.

So I picked last week of July this year. I can deal with the skeeters.

Just went on a hike yesterday in New York (Catskills)...they are out in pretty high numbers. If you stop for a minute you can almost feel yourself being lifted off the ground a bit. Wasn't much of a breeze yesterday to keep them at bay.

blackflies on Gilman

Interesting. I reblazed Skyland Trail white from Gilman to Rimrock Sat. Due to arthritis in knees, I hike at about a mile an hour, left West Ridge trailhead 0920h, Rimrock 1030h, arr Gilman 1130h, started blazing both directions 1230h, stopped blazing Rimrock 1530h. Very light fluky breeze was all the breeze there was, yet no blackflies and few mosquitos. Plenty of fair-weather clouds and bright sun, but they were not out. Maybe their season is about over...

Gap Bugs

Much to my surprise, the Black Flies are still in business in Southern NH. I poked around the So. Gap Mtn trail and whacked around looking for skeletons in the woods. The only place they were not is the top :( Light to moderate fly activity. It was nearly ninety degrees, I was moving pretty slow today.

Here's a tip you might know already. Black flies come straight in at you. So if you are having problems with them getting in your eyes, wear glasses! They don't seem to have figured out how to get past them. Works every time.

Now, if I could find a way to keep them out of my nose, ears and every other orifice!
