ouch
"Black flies are the bane of the north woods. They are found from approximately Massachusetts up to the Arctic Circle. Their season here in New Hampshire is mid May to early July. They hatch out of cool mountain streams, and are a creature of the mountains and forests, not as common near the seacoast or in urban areas. Although they are technically harmless, their bites can be extremely irritating, and cause blood to run down your skin. I've heard that in some parts of Canada they are so bad that they can almost cover exposed skin, and cause caribou to swim into lakes to get away from them. "

Ewwwww. Been there, done that. They really only get to me when they try to crawl inside every orifice on your body by the dozens. I made the mistake of taking my family on vacation in W. Maine in June. The littlest ones were crying, they wouldn't come out of the cabin. We ran to the car, jumped in and they kids wouldn't let me go until they spent five minutes killing every last one with the windows rolled up. My wife was none that happy either. Tried to escape them by paddling out to the middle of the lake. The buggers stayed with me! I learned my lesson. Never again in June.
So I picked last week of July this year. I can deal with the skeeters.
