    Resolution Shelter closed

I spent an unplanned night there last August and enjoyed my time in the aging hovel. It was afternoon and a storm was building. I was about 10 days into a backpacking trip and started the day planning to hike out to 302 and hitch a ride into North Conway, but hitching in a storm seemed like a...

Longest trails hike to a NH4

My personal longest NH hike to a 4K peak. It doesn't fit the rule of using only trails in the White Mountain Guide, but the longest hike I have ever done in New Hampshire to a 4K peak was about 100 miles. I started at the Canadian Border and hiked the Cohos trail. The first 4K peak I reached...

Walk the Length of NH (Virtually)

Good point. Hiking the Cohos Trail last summer would get me there (if I counted the miles when I took after I missed a turn) and I'll probably have that mileage in soon. Still, somehow I'd only think of doing it for miles and logging them after I read the challenge. Of course, I am really...

Walk the Length of NH (Virtually)

It seems the intent is to encourage more walking. It doesn't clearly state that its not about recognizing walking that people have already done, but it does seem to be intended to reward new miles walked, not miles walked before the program. Or am I jumping to conclusions?

Moosilauke loop - Tunnel Brook, Benton, Glencliff

Date of Hike: 5/16/10 Trail Conditions: Tunnel Brook - Plenty of downed trees, care required for some of the stream crossings. One minor bypass around the edge of one pond. Benton - Scattered blowdowns. A good mile or so of snow, monorail up to almost 3 feet at maximum. Special...

Wildcats A - E, via ski trail and Wilcat Ridge

Date of Hike: 5/11/10 Trail Conditions: Snow and ice in cols, monorail up to about 4 feet max. Some mud and melting snow. Two or three minor post-holes noted. Special Equipment Required: Traction essential - micro spikes worked fine. I'm unsure as to whether crampons or micro-spikes...

    Cohos Trail thru-hike journal

I finally got my '09 journal in reasonably shareable condition. I have a decent photo album there - but need a more trail worthy camera for my next week+ back pack. http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=9340 BTW: A few folks are doing lots of work there, the trail continues to...

Thanks for the input and the ideas. I'll definitely relay the info and Kevin and Smitty's suggestions.

Quick reality test - Bike ride from 19 Mile Brook Trail Head to Lot at Glen Ellis?

Thanks for the reality test. Now I'm looking at a better map and thinking, perhaps the opposite direction would be better?

Quick reality test - Bike ride from 19 Mile Brook Trail Head to Lot at Glen Ellis?

A friend of mine needs the Wildcats to finish his 48. We both prefer to do the loop and drive from Boston together (19 mile brook and Glen Ellis - it would definitely make it easier to add Carter, which my dog needs!). Referring to my increasingly addled memory, I think the downhill ride...

    Summer Hiking Goals

My summer goals are a bit in flux, but basically they are: 1) One backpacking trip of about three weeks - probably the LT southbound. I love the trail, it doesn't involve plane fare and its just about the right length. a) While I'm at it do a couple bushwhacks to nearby peaks like Big...

    Happy Birthday, Long Trail!

Dittos to Rolling Stone's post. I'm thinking of going back for a third hike this summer, partially for my own celebration. It is a wonderful trail in its own right, but I was planning my first LT end to end hike when I experienced an injury that that threatened to end my backpacking (and my...

Need past & future Long Trail hikers to share knowledge, questions, experience

Some dedicated folks have been working in conjunction with the GMC on assembling a great line resource for people who are interested in hiking the Long Trail. It is already a wonderful resource which includes an on line End to Enders guide and a forum, as well as an LT Hikers Network. Rolling...

    Pemi Flood Alert (10/25/09)

Reckless - I'd say definitely not. Reckless might have been plunging into a swollen and fast moving stream instead of stopping and waiting. So long as they were prepared to wait out a night (and I believe they were, as they seem to have suffered no ill effects) they did not put themselves in...

    Pemi Flood Alert (10/25/09)

Monica was planning on hiking Owl's Head - not sure where they couldn't cross. I'm not sure if she posts here - but maybe someone will relay a report or provide more info.

Autistic Twin Hikers in magazine story

Very nice story. I appreciate it as a hiker, but also as a teacher. I'll post a link to the article for the students in my class in "Developmental Psychopathology." I use the biography of Temple Grandin in my class, but this article provides something more immediate and current.

Plea from Cohos Trail Association: Help save Kamp Kirk

Here's the text: HELP US SAVE HISTORIC KAMP KIRK An historic, century-old labor camp that the Cohos Trail Association uses when doing trail work in the Nash Stream Forest is in danger of sinking into the ground. Help us save Kamp Kirk. We need to jack it up and put sills under the building...

New England Trail -- towns advice needed

BC - I agree on the SOBO/NOBO thing both for the Cohos in particular and for other trails (like the Long Trail). If anything the Cohos is more even handed than the LT. Anyhow, when traveling SOBO on many trails, I find that going on the assumption that the trail is marked and laid out for...
