Do you hike in the dark?

Another ditto on this. Usually just what is necessary to get back from a sunset viewpoint to the trailhead. Or just long enough to rush back after dallying too long with photography. Hiking and photographing at dusk is the greatest. After it is pitch dark, not so much.

Temperature Could hit 90F in NH

Our forecast is only 74° for Sunday in the Hudson Valley of NY, but I have no doubt we will top out well over 80°. There has been no snow at my house in over 1 month to provide any refrigerator effect. BTW, it is way easier just to use copy and paste from any webpage or digital source that has...

    Panther Mountain 3/30 - 4/1 (Catskills)

Nice report and photos. The Catskills often acquire an attractive appearance when foggy. They may even become mystical when misty. Your photos captured that well. Panther does have great views, and you will probably want to climb it again. Both of the two 3720' contour summits have uniquely...

Lost hiker dies of hypothermia in Catskills

There was a post/reply from Seth Lyon's daughter, Sarah, in the readers' comment section of the Kingston Daily Freeman news article. Sarah offers some insights into the two hikers' abilities, equipment, prior knowledge of the weather forecast, and their condition on Sunday morning when Seth...

    catskill bug question

I also agree with all of the above. The biting black fly season in the Catskills is usually at least 2 weeks or more ahead of the Adirondacks. By June 24 they should be gone. And they never are as bad in the Catskills as they are in the Adirondacks. The current snow pack in the Catskills is...

    Way to go Canada

OK, well then, how is this. That was a great finish to the 50K XC race. Way to go Norge, Deutschland, and Sverige! :D The hockey final was good also. Way to go my fellow Spartan, Ryan Miller! And yes, well done all around, Canada! :)

Q: Can I use the German Hollow lean-to?

Admittedly the eye witness report is not definitive on that point, but I would have to believe the reporter, who is the Catskill lean-to chair, would have walked around sufficiently for a view to verify that no one was inside. There have also been no missing hiker reports. No telling what...

REALLY bad news - Governor's list of NY park closures

It is likely to be similar to NH. The details are yet to be defined and will be on a park by park basis, per the following statement: Some other observations from this and other news articles: At present this is merely a proposed budget by the Governor. The proposed closings and reductions...

Would a polarizing filter have helped?

That is an excellent photo comparison, Billy, for the multiple polarizing effects they illustrate. One other curious effect in your photos is that the mass of Mount Washington appears lighter in photo #13 (the maximum polarizer effect) than it is in #12. In general a polarizer filter does not...

    Slipping in some Tongue!

I use Microsoft's OneNote to compose trip reports and any complex or long post. It is an add-on to Office, and a stripped down version of Word, but much easier to copy/paste from than Word. It is possible to organize one's posts in a hierarchy of notebooks, pages, and sub-pages (a poor man's...

    Hit or Miss? Snow 12/20/09

Nice pictures, grouseking. Have fun. We were forecast to get up to 7" in Kingston, NY. But it was nothing more than a dusting. I suppose I should be happy that I do not have to shovel anything. The Catskills appear to be still picking up some light accumulations on the Doppler radar, but I...

Is Yard Mtn a 4000 footer?

The Marshalls' 4000 foot peak criteria per the "Story of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers" written Grace Hudowalski and Orville Gowie for the 1970 edition of the 46er book, page 3: There were 42 peaks on their original list. Russell Carson later convinced them to include Gray peak (for the reasons...

Is Yard Mtn a 4000 footer?

Agreed, the question is a matter of criteria. It is also a purely academic and moot question in terms of the 46er list; because the 46er Club has chosen to maintain a static list of 46 peaks. It means that all 46ers will climb the same 46 peaks. And there is something to be said for that. In...

Is Yard Mtn a 4000 footer?

Good information posted already. A very useful list which shows the prominence of many Adirondack peaks is this Peakbagger.com list of 3700' Adirondack peaks . The numbered peaks have 160' clean prominence. This is their standard criteria for northeastern US peaks. The difference between...

    Morale Booster?

Good photographic weather. Sometimes that means the sun coming out. Sometimes it means overcast. More often than not it means the wind stopping, so I answered that. But occasionally a little breeze on the surface of water is good. OTOH, a good breeze on a hot summer day is always welcome...

Capturing reflections of foliage in a waterfall/cascade

Yes, and from the prior image in your gallery it appears that you had the same basic formula working. I assume this was the Roaring Brook Falls stream above the falls. I also noticed that you made it to the Giant's Nubble and Washbowl, a couple of favorite spots in the Adirondacks during fall...

Capturing reflections of foliage in a waterfall/cascade

Thanks for the comments. Occasionally my Canon XTi has trouble autofocusing on moving water, but in general the camera's autofocus is remarkably good with this subject matter. Only on a few shots have I had to use manual focus with standard zoom lenses. The Canon tilt-shift lenses are all...

Capturing reflections of foliage in a waterfall/cascade

High Falls, NY Here is a brief description on the location of my photos. Those who live near the Catskills and Hudson Valley might find it a worthwhile location for a photo stop after hike. It is not far from the northern trailheads of the Mohonk Preserve. This site is in the hamlet of High...

Capturing reflections of foliage in a waterfall/cascade

I am opening this topic in the General Backcountry rather than the Photography forum as it may of interest to hikers in general. Although the features of a digital SLR would be very helpful in achieving this type of photo, the technique might be accomplished with some point and shoot cameras...

Catskills bushwack to the Cornell-Slide col

Thanks for the report. I have only heard a few stories about this area, but I have never been in there myself. It sounds very attractive and remote. Another potential reason to enter this area would be to climb the old and dirty slide that gave Slide Mountain its name. It is reputedly a very...
