FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

Last I heard, MA doesn't count imported hydro as "green" for the purposes of the required minimum green energy content, which is why up until now, there hasn't been much of a 'pull' from MA for Northern Pass. But the EPA CO2 requirements are a separate animal. I think a lot of the opposition...

Pentax Optio W80 camera - exceeds expectations

A couple of years ago, I bought a Pentax Optio W80 camera to take with me hiking (after previously purchasing an Olympus waterproof camera that turned out to be a POS). My primary requirements were: waterproof, shock-resistant, compact, and cold-resistance. I do a fair amount of canoeing and...

Reel Brook Trail Spring Cleaning - 5/24/2014

Date of Hike: 5/24/2014 Trail Conditions: First trip of the spring, with a group of 3. Hiked the entire trail (2.9 miles) to the junction with the Kinsman Ridge/AT. All water crossings were easily rock-hoppable. Lower third of the trail is mainly dry, middle third has some wet areas, and upper...

Spur Paths And The "No Camping Within 200' Of Trail" Rule

Just to recap -- in the WMNF this is the One True Rule Book. Notice that there is one page of "Leave No Trace is Good". That's the "do this or you're a bad person" guidelines, as opposed to "regulations". And the LNT 200 foot trail & water restriction is weasely: "Camp at sites that have...

Spur Paths And The "No Camping Within 200' Of Trail" Rule

That is a designated campsite within the Dry River Wilderness. And an awesome one at that. There aren't very many on the Davis path. There is one north of isolation near the davis path/isolation trail east, and there is one just off the davis path near the southern end (at the county boundary...

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

153-A:24 says: Which says to me that (a) they'll still bill you for reckless behavior and (b) there's a 10K limit for reckless behavior, but the old version did NOT have an upper limit on negligent behavior ??? (see the Scott Mason $$$ bill ....). So, to limit your liability, you should go...

Tent, Sleeping Pads And Bags - Store In Bags Or Open?

For sleeping bags, most of mine came with big mesh bags for storage. I have a couple of cotton bags like these for the others. I would be concerned that a non-breathable storage bag might have problems with moisture, but on the other hand, the MAIN thing is I make sure all the tents/bags/pads...

list of NH hikes by elevation gain?

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

So, I've read the article, can somebody summarize what the version voted on *really* says? What are the conditions under which having the card *won't* pay? And did they change the conditions underwhich you will be asked to pay for rescue if you don't have the card? (I'm a fully prepared...

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

I didn't find (much) trash left in the bear box at the Franconia Brook East tentsite last November. What little there was went in the Scout's backpacks and went to the parking lot with us. I think there is a caretaker there on weekends in the summer, but I'm sure there are people who abuse...

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

If any of you have lots of time on your hand to read, the subject of bears generates a lot of opinions. Here's one blog entry/comment stream that has all of them. http://sectionhiker.com/bear-bag-rant-its-not-about-protecting-your-food/

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

Used them last November when I was in the Pemi area with a Scout group. The only drawback is that you have to pick up the canister during normal business hours. But you can return them via a "drop box" at the Lincoln Woods visitor center.

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

The USFS has free bear canisters available at the ranger stations and the Lincoln visitor center. Please use them if you are going to a campsite w/o a bear box. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/whitemountain/learning/safety-ethics/?cid=STELPRDB5186355...

    Old Man/Modified Pemi Loop - 4/26/2014

The Old man is me, since the orginal fell down over a decade ago. The weather was looking pretty bad, with lots of summits in the clouds, temps just above freezing, gusty winds, and a mixture of rain, snow, sleet, and possible oobleck. I didn't want to skip a weekend of hiking, since I've had...

    Need overnight advice

Most of these have been mentioned: Cheap camping: year-round at Lafayette Place and Hancock Campground (neither particularly convenient to the Presis), Fourth Iron at the south end of Crawford Notch. Zealand/Sugarloaf I&II, Dry River Campground 'in season' in Crawford Notch. Free Camping: Gale...

Osteoarthritis of hip -- when is surgery recommended?

I don't have any clue what you've tried so far for treatment -- there may be physical therapy or medications that help before resorting to surgery. For joint pains in the knees, I've found that Glucosamine Chondroitin helps. Big giant fricking horse-pills, whenever I get lazy and forget to...

    Good Spring Hikes In NH

Yesterday I was poking around the NOHRSC snow coverage maps, and this week vs 1 year ago, it looks like the Whites have a foot or more snow on the ground than last year. "Most" of the areas the snow was cleared in the woods at lower elevations by about the 3rd week of April (still coverage...
