Bushwacker? Is that what you are?

Thank the deities (all of them) that Wikipedia's disambiguation doesn't link to Urban Dictionary.

    REI Dividend Due Soon

Sadly, my oil heat bill is no longer direct-billed to my REI Visa... so the dividend will be lower (but on the bright side, I'm no longer paying for oil heat....) and my REI.COM online account got deleted for inactivity... oops.

Buy now or wait? (Snowshoes & crampons)

The sales are definitely underway. Whittaker Mountaineering just announced their "20% off all winter gear" sale -- so that puts a pair of EVO ascents at $160, and G10's at $102. you should be able to find similar deals on lots of places. But I agree that G10s might be overkill. vtarmynavy.com...

Bushwhack On North Twin From 2nd Crossing To Ridge?

he he. I've hiked that trail in the past couple of years. I do have to say the blazing is not very good :-)

Bushwhack On North Twin From 2nd Crossing To Ridge?

Kind of disappointing that the oh-so-wizzy-and-modern ArcGIS appears to be using 90-year-old maps that are full of fiction rather than any of the newer versions. And it looks like Garmin has the same issue. Are they afraid of copyright on USGS maps?

    Thermarest Neoair

Nobody else complains about my NeoAir because the snoring drowns it out :-)

Bushwhack On North Twin From 2nd Crossing To Ridge?

Interesting. That shows what looks like the 'modern' approach up the side of North Twin, with the current final river crossing. It also shows the NT Trail going all the way to Little River Rd, and includes the Fire Warden's Trail. The TOPO that I posted I would have assumed is newer, since the...

I'll keep you in mind when I'm planning. It's been a rough winter just getting out (too many conflicting life events...). I think my schedule will let me out more in April and May, but I'm generally Fri->Sun, harder to swing Mon->Thurs.

    Twins/galehead loop

BTW, if you look at the USGS Topos for this area, you'll see a marked trail from the end of Little River Rd to just before the current summer trailhead. I've seen some folks refer to this as a "herd path" or "bushwhack", but it isn't really. At some point, it was an official trail, and it is...

Bushwhack On North Twin From 2nd Crossing To Ridge?

Interesting. I think I've seen the spot where the "rejoin" is, and wondered if that was a re-route... Yeah, completely ignore Google Maps for the AT through the Whites. It appears someone just dragged a pen across there are said "there be dragons here" and left it at that. The route from...

    Thermarest Neoair

I bought my first NeoAir All-Season for last winter, and loved it. Small, light, and warm. Most of my other pads (various self-inflating REI and CampMor and insulated Big Agnes) have sprung leaks and become impossible to keep repaired, and my kids kept coveting my NeoAir, so this winter I bought...

    Hiking partner

I'm also a pretty slow hiker, which is why I hike solo a lot -- I'm pretty much always in the back of any group. This winter has been tough for me on the 'planning' side, so I haven't gotten out much, which means I'm even more out of shape than usual. I've got my fingers crossed that I can get...

Which Trails Get Broken Out The Fastest In The Whites

Join one or more Meetup groups. Watch the schedule. Hike the day after they do. (just kidding....) (maybe) (Actually, I sometimes watch the big Meetup groups to make sure I don't share a trailhead time. Guilty as charged)

Cost of hiking on Franconia Ridge - fail

I'm torn... once again, I fail to see how the "hiking solo" had anything to do with this rescue. But on the other hand, having a history of hip dislocations and requiring canes to hike would suggest that he wasn't physically able to execute a hike in rugged terrain. Unless he had 20 people with...

Good First Aid Info With Gear Recommendations

Funny you should mention a SAM splint. I nearly always have a 36" flatfold tucked into what's probably supposed to be a hydration reservoir slot in my pack. At only 4 oz, it's less than half the weight of my InReach satelite beacon, but you're right, it might be a wasted 4 oz. In my teenage...

Good First Aid Info With Gear Recommendations

On the time factor - I have to give up 1 weekend of hiking every 2 years for SOLO WFA training. (That's 1 out of 104 weekends, less than 1%). I think that's well worth it. Ok, so really don't go out all of the other 103 weekends, but you get the point. My last cycle I took the class through...

    Status of Dry River Trail?

I don't believe they are proposing to change the Zone A/B/C/D classification maps within the Dry River Wilderness, but changing these trails from Class 2 to Class 1 may be bringing them into closer alignment with the Zone definition (for example, the stretch of the West Isolation Trail is...

    Garfield

In case it's not obvious, Tim's directions are how to exit from the Gale River Trail summer trailhead to Beaver Brook XC parking. The Little River Rd parking area is the winter location for access to the North Twin Trail (since Haystack Rd is closed). To get from Beaver Brook to the Gale...

    Status of Dry River Trail?

For those of us with weak terminology skills, what does it mean to change the trail from Class 2 to Class 1?

Ok, I should have trusted that Mohamed Elozy's site would have it. Click the link near the bottom of the page for the Google map. http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/garfield.html#Winter
