I have to admit this made me laugh out loud ... and then shudder. I know that when it comes to **** sapiens there are happy drunks, sloppy drunks and mean drunks. I wonder what a mean drunk Ursus americanus would be like?
True???
The following collection of "stupid hiker tricks" has been floating around the internet for some time. I don't know if it is true or not. It is listed as having been published in the San Francisco Examiner. I searched the Examiner site and couldn't pull up this article, but I don't...
Life is never dull in Keene, NH. On April 6th an experienced kayaker, Mark Boucher, was pulled beneath the waterfall on the Ashuelot River in Keene.
(this is a stock photo of the falls in question)
According to the news story:

Keep on hiking
I don't think anyone (including me and I started this thread) is talking about not hiking. In fact, if you tell me depressing news that the world is going to hell, my first reaction is "Lord I need a hike." But we can think of ways to improve our carbon footprint while hiking...
Update on those eagles
Thanks for the link Chip. I've enjoyed checking in on them from time to time. This photo is from yesterday. You can see mama and chick. Also note there's a meal waiting in the lower right.
Note: the link wasn't "stable" so I removed it.
I went to a lecture called "Peak Everything" by Richard Heinberg at Keense State College last night. I saw MonadnockVol there (shout out! :D )
Heinberg was not only talking about peak oil production but the depletion of all renewable energy resources. I'm not trying to ignite a debate over...
It's 29 degrees at my house in Keene right now (5:45 AM) and there is frost on my car windshield. The Mt. Washington Observatory web site says it's 9 degrees there. I wonder if this enough to put a damper on the spirits of the blackflies that are out in force now across southern NH.
But wait there's more
So I've been doing a little reading about bisphenol-A. It apparently isn't that bad SHORT TERM. In fact, it is used as an anti-oxidant in some foods and cosmetics. But it is an endocrine disruptor because it mimics estrogen. So repeated exposures to it could be a bad...
Great.
Of course I just bought two new Nalgene bottles!
Here's the information page on bisphenol-A from the makers of Nalgene:

Well, I could be wrong about this, but I don't think they are "officially" closed. I think it is a strong recommendation. Anyone have the definitive scoop on this?
New Avatar
Dear SherpaKroto,
Interesting new avatar - and yes I'll stay tuned for "bearly live." I have to say, however, that I thought the old avatar with the puzzle pieces was extremely clever. I'll miss it.
The Green Mountain Club discourages spring hiking because of trail erosion that results from hiking on soft muddy ground. This year they published a list of alternative hikes in Vermont:
