    Another Sign of Spring

Saw my first water strider on yesterday's hike. If you're not sure what a water strider is, here's a picture (not mine). P.S. This one's female.

    Amazing Camping Food?

In Praise of Quinoa Do you know about quinoa? It is a grain from South America. Few people have heard about it, yet I find it in regular old supermarkerts (e.g. Shaw's in Keene, NH). Unlike rice it is a complete protein (all nine essential amino acids) so you can eat it by itself (unlike...

    Question: Alander, South Taconic Trail

Thanks Thanks Trudy. I guess it's time to make the drive. And thanks to all who posted for the other related info. It's not NH (a little Granite State chauvanism) but it is certainly a beautiful area with a high "vista to effort ratio." I first discovered it from reading the the New York...

    Goose Pond, Keene, NH 03431

Still some snow and ice on the trails around the pond where people compacted it all winter. The beaver is out and active.

    kahtoola microspikes for tucks?

Hmmm... In my experience they would be better than bare booting but not optimal. Under steep conditions (i.e. Tucks) and when snow is loose (like granular corn) you want to "bite" deeper and MS don't give you that. Also MS lose some of their traction when you can't place your sole flat...

    Women and hiking

It's not just about hiking alone So I had a feeling that the "hiking alone" thing might hijack the thread. As a woman I don't mind hiking alone. Some women do. Some men don't mind hiking alone, some men do. I have a sense - and I'll be the first to admit that maybe I'm reading too much...

    Women and hiking

I know on many Catskill 3500 Club hikes about 10 minutes into the hike the leader would call "separation" and the men would hike on ahead out of sight. We women would then do "whatever" and then when we started hiking we would call out so that we wouldn't catch the men writing their names in...

    Women and hiking

I'm interested in hearing about the experiences of my fellow (hmm "fellow" seems like a strange word to use here :p ) women hikers. All kinds of experiences, but in part what makes the female experience different from the male experience. So I'll start us off. I guess one of the things that...

    Question: Alander, South Taconic Trail

Has anyone been on the trail to Alander recently? I promised a friend I'd drive down from NH and help her take her kids on a hike but she wants it to be free of snow and ice. Thanks for any info you have.

Trail: Metacomet-Monadnock to summit (from South) The parking lot is starting to melt but you should have 4-wheel drive. The trail was packed snow and ice and perfect for my stabilizers.
