    Welch/Dickey 3/6/14

Welch-Dickey is one of my all time favorites. I always like to have lunch at the Col while gazing at the Tripyramids. Great pics and great story. Thanks for sharing.

    Books

WOW! Can't beat that price even if you don't like the book. Obviously everyone has different taste. Usually whenever I am reading a book, no matter how much I like it, there comes a point where I want to hurry up and finish it. With this book I had no such desire. In fact I purposely slowed my...

    Books

I'll throw out another vote for The Last Season by Eric Blehm . It's probably the best book I have ever read. Another hiking book I liked was Hiking Through by Paul Stutzman. He can get a little "preachy" at times but his reasons for hiking the Appalachian Trail are something that I think all...

Beginner Winter Hiking in the Whites

I think a good hike for any beginner during any season is Mt. Willard.

Top 25 "Scenic Hikes" in New England?

It's not a 4K footer or in the WMNF but Mount Magalloway way up in Pittsburg is one of my favorites.

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

I won't make any friends for this but...as someone who served 21 years in the military and believes strongly in LNT, I'll just give my $.02 on this and be gone. There are plenty of places to honor our fallen troops. Places such as Veteran's Cemeteries and Memorials which have been constructed...

Mt. Jefferson Motel open under new management

Stayed there a few years ago when it was the Jeff-Notch. The place does have a great location to the trails and beautiful scenery all around. My only complaint was the cabin (though nice and clean) was a bit too small as the previous owners tried to cram a bit too much furniture into it. Good...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

Sorry to hear that. The place was probably the best kept secret in Jefferson. I can't say I am too surprised though. As great as the breakfast was he wasn't doing all that much business. Being a one person operation people would walk out if they didn't get served quickly.

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

I think you mean The Water Wheel in Jefferson. I've eaten there a few times and I found it to be overrated. It's crowded and a bit pricey for breakfast. I'm not hard to please when it comes to food but I did not think the food was all that good. I did have a very good breakfast in Jefferson at...

    Cliff Walk - Newport RI

Have not done the Cliffwalk in a few years but I always loved doing it. Thanks Amicus for the info.

Major Northern NH ATV trail system grand opening

Not much to add here since I am not an ATVer. I just wanted to say that up in Pittsburg that they have a well planned and organized trail system for ATVs. There seems to be little problems in the community with it. I've done some hiking in Pittsburg and never encountered an ATV in any of my travels.

    New England Gems

True. But I thought it was a gem of a hike because my young son loved the abandoned well and fire place. I guess an old Inn was there at one time. Plenty of gray jays as well which we enjoyed feeding. Sometimes you need to look beyond the views.

    New England Gems

Quite a few actually. Welch/Dickey Avalon Willard Starr King Magalloway <<--- My personal favorite for views.

Thanksgiving in the Whites (or VT?). Where to eat?

I'll cast a vote for either the Highland Center or Joe Dodge Lodge (Pinkham Notch Visitor Center) . You can't go wrong with either. At Highland you can buy beer and wine. At Pinkham it is BYOB.

    "Biofreeze" topical pain reliever ?

I like to use Bigeloil for sore muscles after a hike. So what if it is made for horses, I find it works for my tired aching muscles. You don't smell like a horse though, it has a nice lemon fragrance to it. It does sting a bit when you first put it on but it has a fairly long lasting effect.

A very busy Mt. Megalloway over Labor Day weekend

Probably one of the most underrated and best kept secret hikes in all of NH. I've done it a few times and I think the summit has the best views of any mountain I've hiked in NH. Of course a trip to the Garfield Falls always follows this hike.

    Hikes in Crawford Notch?

My thanks to all of you. I like ALL of the suggestions. Fortunetely I'll be going back to Crawford Notch at the end of July so I can save some of your suggested hikes for that week. For this weekend I have nailed it down to Mt Avalon and Ripley Falls. Mt. Crawford via Davis Path is top on the...

    Hikes in Crawford Notch?

I'll be camping there this weekend with my 8 year-old son. He's hiked in the WMNF before and loves it. We've done Mt. Willard three or four times and are looking for another trail in Crawford Notch. We did Arethusa Falls last year and have it on our list to do again. I've also got a few others...
