Reminder Laconia Bike Week starts this weekend

Ok, I will admit it, I love bike week! Though I’m not about to walk into a biker bar wearing my kilt, however.

ANY chance the shuttles will be running this weekend?

I too will be in the area Saturday morning, and passing Haystack around 5:30am-ish if that is helpful.

Barnes Field - Huge Group Memorial Day weekend

Given that most meet up groups routinely exceed the 10 person rule in the wilderness, I doubt they will care about the rules.

Loop Trip Advice (Jackson, Webster, Willey, Field, and Tom)

If you do Webster Cliff, please let me know how the trail is from the last lookout to 302. I maintain that section and I have yet to make a trip this year. I plan to visit that section in the next week.

    Who's done the Hamlin/Katahdin loop?

A personal note about Baxter if you please. This August will be my 7th trip to Baxter State Park. Each year a group of 20 to 30 of us rent out an entire campsite for a week so as not to interfere with other’s wilderness experiences. I have yet to encounter any Draconian Regulations that have...

    Who's done the Hamlin/Katahdin loop?

Ditto what everyone else said. My last visit I went up Helon Taylor over the knife edge tagged Baxter Peak and was heading to Hamlin then eventually Howe, when I had to turn back because of an injury and headed down Saddle. However you do the loop, it is a fun day above treeline. I’m looking...

Seeking advice on how to pack for "light and fast" hiking

Tell me about it. As a WFR I too carry enough gear and first aid to assist in almost any emergency situation. Some of my hiking friends think I carry too much, yet I have had at least two occasions where I was glad I carried what I did.

Another "Donation" to the S&R Fund ? - Mt Madison Rescue

Let's see, they are all wearing cotton and only mom has a small water bottle. Yep, seen that a lot lately.

Redlining and Ponds near Sandwich Dome

The Sandwich Notch road is open from the Thornton side to Center Sandwich. I too plan to do the Algonquin to Sandwich Dome and then out Smart's Brook in the next few weeks.

No longer charging for some trailhead parking.

I noticed recently that both “The Eddy” and the “Smarts Brook” trailhead no longer require a parking permit. There is a large sticker covering the green envelope canister saying that this is no longer a fee spot. Has the parking permit policy changed recently? Are there other areas that no...

Mountain Rescue Service speaks up about State billing

One valuable lesson I learned from the Scott Mason case is do not under any circumstances submit to an interrogation after being rescued. Simply thank your rescues for your rescue and inform F&G that if they have any question they can contact your attorney. I realize this seems harsh, yet in one...

Uphill walking in Campton to Lincoln area

I usually walk from my house up 49 to Burbank Hill Rd then along Upper Mad River Rd to the Welch/Dickey trailhead then down Upper Mad to six mile bridge, then walk along 49 back to my house. Another hike I like is to hike up Chickenboro to the forest land then through an open field, which then...

    Fool Scout Ball VII

Not a trip report per se, just thought I would post a few pictures from our 7th annual Fool Scout Ball. Enjoy. I hope others who attended will post as well. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3475637496906.156355.1450265390&type=1&l=304b2b20b8

    Trail Adopters Needed

I might be interested. I have only walked the trail once so I will take a trip this weekend to check it out.

    Trail Adopters Needed

The 1.8 of the Old Skidder Trail does that include the Flume Path as well since the Old Skidder Trail is only .8, at least according to my map.

Glacier glasses for people with prescription glasses

http://www.opticsplanet.net/bolle-actionsport-vigilante.html?gclid=CKz56t6Z2q4CFYGo4Aod2TTdzw I use these. They allow me to change the lens depending on how much light there is.

Ammonoosuc - Washington - Jewel loop

There is a sign at the lower parking lot of the cog directing hikers were to park. The Jewell enters and exits about 50 yards up the tracks. There are several blue sticks that mark the spot where to enter the woods. Also, both routes are currently broken out.

    Katahdin Route

Our group is on our 8th year at Baxter and your trips seems doable. I do have one question, what do you mean by in and out of the saddle? If you mean just crossing the junction of the Saddle as you head to Hamlin, and then to Howe that is fine. If you mean head down Saddle, then head up Hamlin...

    Au Revoir, Resolution Shelter

I stayed at Resolution shelter once and it reminded me of a bear’s lunchbox, because if a bear came to the front, you were basically lunch.
