Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Steve Smith, to name one person, does a couple of hikes a week and reports on them on his own website, but he isn’t represented on this site. And he has mentioned to me some of his acquaintances (was one The Peakmaster?) who also do a lot of hiking and aren’t online.

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

I haven’t hiked with anyone else (started out hiking with anyone else, that is; I’ve fallen into step with someone else occasionally) since November 2011, when I convinced my son to join me for one last hike (my 12th in 12 different months) of Mount Watatic. My ladyfriend, Susan, retired from...

    Pemi loop

PEMI alone could work. The surrounding oval would be the loop. Also, ‘‘Franconia’’ parking lot? Do you mean Lincoln Woods? Although I suppose you could start anywhere you wanted. Lincoln Woods is just the one place where you wouldn’t have to do much climbing to reach the course.

Just for Laughs, Most Annoying Hiking Partner Behaviors

I annoyed our leader while on a Sierra Club backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park. I got too close to him while we were struggling up a pass and he turned around with his palm held out and told me to ‘‘back off, please.’’

Just for Laughs, Most Annoying Hiking Partner Behaviors

Back in 1984, I was on an Appalachian Mountain Club hike of the Morgan and Percival loop. Coming back down to the road, some guy behind me dropped his Thermos bottle. It went shooka-shooka-shooka when he shook it, so he inexplicably removed the cap and dumped the broken glass out onto the trail...

    New Presidential for you peakbaggers

I guess I hit Ball Crag. Haven’t gone the other direction, while either descending or ascending Huntington Ravine. Thanks!

Snowshoe (and XC) Free Demo Day - Saturday, January 26 at Windblown XC

For anyone else just seeing this, that was Saturday the 25th, not Sunday the 26th.

    New Presidential for you peakbaggers

Is that Huntington Ravine that that is above? I wonder if I went over it already.

    Waumbek

I guess that explains why the two near me on the Crawford Path Monday vanished when a woman with a dog came along.

I need help with my last 13

Check www.mountain-forecast.com/. It looks pretty miserably cold the next week. Actually, not just miserably cold, but dangerously cold; below zero after Sunday. Here’s Hale: http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hale-New-Hampshire/forecasts/1236

I noticed one typo: Under Waterfalls, you left out the D in Bondcliff.

    2013 In Review: Peak-Bragging!

You didn’t climb Basin that time you went around its base to get to Sawteeth, eh? Saving it.

    Are the rivers overflowing?

I drove up and climbed Mount Pierce. It looked like Exit 29 was open again. Didn’t notice any closure signs, anyway. After climbing the mountain, I explored the trails behind the Highland Center. The Around-the-Lake Trail crossed a stream and there was quite a pile of ice chunks stacked up and...

    crampon hints for downhill

Thanks for the tip to walk down backwards. I climbed my first-ever winter 4000-footer today, Mount Pierce, using MicroSpikes, and while there was nothing particularly steep, of course, along the Crawford Path, there were still some worrisome stretches encountered while descending that hadn’t...

    Are the rivers overflowing?

    Huh! Thanks for the tip.

    Are the rivers overflowing?

I see that there’s been some flooding around Thornton, at least, with Route 3 through there closed and also both exits (29) off 93. Would anyone here expect there to be any trouble for motorists passing through that area — or anywhere else along the Interstate 93 corridor, for that matter —...

    Old Ski Path on Monadnock

I think we did pass! I think there were two solo hikers and a group of four descending. I started from the parking lot about 1:40 p.m. Here is what I looked like when I reached the top, maybe you’ll recognize me. I carried snowshoes in a backpack but didn’t need them. The herd path I was...

    2013 In Review: Peak-Bragging!

I thought at first, DreamFarmer, you meant you are 85 years of age. But I guess you mean you have 30 more mountains to climb to complete the list. You looked pretty good for 85. IagreewithJamie, get that application in the mail so you can pick up your certificate in April. And get your properly...
