    Gothics--Ribbon Slide=TrueNorth Slide?

Dax, here's my understanding of the situation, but I can be wrong. They are two names for the same thing. The slide splits 2/3rds of the way up the mountain, with one slide heading parallel to the brook that drains the North Face. The main part of the slide heads continuously in a northerly...

    The Gothics

Thanks to you, Nonlegit, and your taste in music, I now have hope for this younger generation! May I suggest LZ 1, donning headphones for "Dazed and Confused", then perhaps "Houses of the Holy". The Grand Finale being the Allman Brother's "Live at Fillmore East". The encore could consist of...

    The Gothics

Nonlegit, here's my 2 cents on the subject. Try the Ribbon slide up the Northface. It's really not that hard and the scenery can't be beat! For my money, it's as good as the trip from Pyramid! Tim, nice avatar! I don't recall him on the expedition!

Grumpy, that was very well put, and thought out. I couldn't have said it better!

    Boys Scout's have a problem

I cannot speak for all Scout Councils, but in the Great Trails Council (W.Mass), all new leaders are trained in many aspects of scouting, including 'Leave No Trace'. The Boy Scouts have developed a very intensive training program in the recent years that teach leaders everything from LNT to...

    Berlin Mnt.

Thanks for the reply Rivet. I would assume then that I wouldn't be tresspassing by walking on the Carmelite property, if it's listed in a hiking guide. Again, thanks for the info!

    Berlin Mnt.

Im planning on climbing Berlin Mnt. (Mass/NY line) on Sunday. I will start at the pulloff at the top of Rt.2 and head south on the Taconic Crest. Instead of backtracking, I'm thinking about taking a trail that shows up on an older map of mine. It appears to end up at the old Carmelite Novitate...

    Basin, Saddleback, Skylight, Gray Info

I would have to third Silverbacks suggestion of Bushnell Falls, and add that in that case, why not Slant Rock? Shaves another couple of miles each way. On the day you do the Skylight-Gray loop, go over Marcy to 4 Corners, to Skylight, back to 4C, hit Gray, and then continue along the ridge to...

    instep crampons v. yaktrax

Carla, I just posted my opinion of traction aids in the Yaktrax thread, but I did want to share with you a thought about the Yaktrax. A friend of mine has a pair which he likes, but his only complaint is that he gets a 'rolling' sensation when he walks on them. I'm not sure exactly what he...

    Yak-Trax

Stabilicers look like they would be tough to beat. Take it from experience, don't waste your time with the Surefoot Get-a-Grip. I have a pair for ice fishing, and they border on useless. The steel pins are only a 1/16 th of an inch long, and just don't dig in far enough.

    Stoves

My brother-in-law was a die-hard Svea man. A few years ago, he wanted to cook pancakes on it, so he attached a flame spreader. Within minutes the top of the fuel tank was cherry red due to the lack of ventilation from the fry pan on top of it. The ensuing explosion sent brass shrapnel...

    Stoves

I've got to join in the chorus saluting the MSR Whisperlite. I had one for 15 years, bought a rebuild kit for it, and gave it to my son. Then went out and bought another one. I've used them in -20 temps and had good luck with them. The one time I had a problem was when I was ice fishing last...

    Kaaterskill Falls accident

Thanks for the info Mark, and the pictures are wonderful. Dr. Marino, the girl's aunt, commented that the area needs to be signed and fenced in. I certainly sympathize with her and the girl's family. But we all know that signs and a fence aren't going to stop a inquisitive 20 year old from...

Walking about in lion country - random thoughts

That is a great story about a mountain lion in E. Mass.. Out here in the far west (Berkshire Cty), we've had fairly common sightings of lions. But it seems like every time a sighting is reported to DFW, they write it off as a bobcat or coyote. I have to say that unless it's in a very poor...

    DIX via Hunters pass

If anyone hasn't seen Joel's site, DO IT! It is a wealth of info, maps, suggested routes that I find invaluable. I've done many a hike armed with a printout of one of Joel's maps and carried his hand drawn map of Time's Square in case I had a problem with that intersection. By the way Joel...

    Campmor Brand Products

Let's see, there's the 10 deg. winter bag I bought 10 years ago, that my son uses now. The assorted fleece items that are real comfy. A 30 deg. down bag that is my non-winter standard. Convertable pants that are my #1 choice when I'm bushwackin'. Yeah, I have no problem with Campmor brands, and...
