    Swimming Holes

Other than the pool in my backyard? Let's see SC, there's the two spots in West Lebanon/Brainard where Rt. 20 crosses the river. (I'm not sure if that's the Poestenkill, Batenkill, or whateverkill) They look like nice spots, but I don't think there would be alot of privacy. How about a...

    Nippletop/Dix and Gothics TN Slides

Rico, True North is a gas!! The route that Inge gave me was to follow the small brook that crosses the Orebed Brook trail, about .4 miles above the leanto. Follow that brook up, staying on the right hand tributary at the fork. You'll see the north face of Gothics through the trees. Quite a...

    Seward Range Question

Couldn't agree more with Doc, CB is the way to go. Although when I did it, I went down the north side of Seward and took the Blueberry back. That was a mess in there. If you have to take the northside trail, use it in the descending mode. If you're adventurous enough, carry an ultralite pack up...

Giant Mt. (NY) Hike - dumb question (maybe)

Some of my greatest memories are from solo hiking. However, make sure you leave an itinerary of where you're going, avoid any off trail hiking , and don't overdo your limits. Besides, the pace is always what YOU want it to be.

    aquaseal map sealant, Any good?

While not having any experience with Aquaseal, I am an avid user of the gallon Ziploc method. Another thing to consider is don't use your expensive maps on the trail. Use one that's printed from mapping software (Topo, Delorme, etc.), or downloaded from Maptech,Topozone or Terraserver. You can...

Things that make you go........... hmmmmm

Two thoughts come to mind Tim. The stove is probably the remnant of an old logging camp, so more than likely, it was brought up there when snow was on the ground. I know you've seen the old movies at the ADK Museum in Blue Mnt. Lake, where the huge sleds of logs are being pulled down the...

Does the Giant need a break?

SC, i agree with your ideas, but I'm not sure how it could ever be implemented, or even enforced, as Pete stated. Much like you, Giant was my first, and the one that set the hook in me. The problem as already stated, is the relative ease of climbing Giant. It's a short hike, the trailhead is on...

    Saddleback Cliff on Range Trail

I wouldn't say it's the most difficult climb, it's just that there is some exposure. I personally think its reputation is bigger than the climb itself. I've travelled it both ways, and it was just a matter of taking your time and following the paint blazes. However, if you do have a problem...

    Mt. Greylock

b, sorry to hear about the finger, that's too bad! Im assuming you didn't have any problems with the parking.

    Mt.Greylock via AT question

Poison Ivy, you are indeed correct, it is Outlook Ave.! Thank you for the correction. By the way, check out the huge glacial erratic in the field across from the trailhead. PI was also correct about the lack of obvious markings on the Rt. 8 crossing. There is a small AT marker on the east...

    Mt.Greylock via AT question

While I can't picture an actual parking area there, I'm almost positive that parking on the side of the road would not be a problem. Overlook Ave. isn't a very well traveled road, and I'm sure your not the only person that is going to park there. The next road crossing to the south is Rt. 8...

    destinations near Broadalbin, NY

Bob, Berlin Mnt. on the NY/Mass line is a great hike, although it might be at the limit of your 60 minute drive from Broadalbin. Head east out Rt. 2 from Troy and park at the top of the Petersburg Pass. The trail up is eroded from ATV use, but the views are very nice.

Why is it important to "Leave No Trace" ?

Hey Rivet, speaking of bringing back memories, remember that 'Keep America Beautiful' ad with the Native American? He had a tear running down his cheek. That was a powerful message!

Why is it important to "Leave No Trace" ?

I think JJ's mention of the Boy Scouts former practice of burying their garbage rings so true. However, the Scouts now have their own LNT policy, which they promote through training of adult leaders and the boys themselves. Years ago, Scouts left alot of traces; litter, feces, noise pollution...

?Storm damage in ADKs on 6/13?

Doc, you mentioned that the Govenor had promised all resources will be used to reopen the Nway as soon as possible. Channel 10 news this morning quoted Mr.Pataki as saying that work would be going on around the clock to clear the road, but 10 reported that work had stopped around midnight...

Stone arch bridges in Chester-Middlefield Mass.

I've heard a rumor that there was some stabilization work going on at the old stone bridges on the abandoned B&A line in Chester and Middlefield. Our Scout troop took a hike into there on Saturday, and didn't see anything being done. Does anyone have any info on possible work being done there...

    Snakes in the 46'ers

I've only seen two snakes in the ADKs.One was at the camping area behind Round Pond, in a fire ring. The other was on the top of Hough. He was sunning himself on the summit rock. Both were harmless Garter snakes and both fled the scene. High elevation does not limit them, so you will see them...
