Hello all,

I'll be spending the weekend in Broadalbin, NY this weekend coming up. I won't have a lot of time to hike but I was wondering if anyone could point out any hidden jewels within a 30-60 minute drive of Broadalbin. Whether peaks, river hikes, waterfalls, etc...

Thanks,
Bob

you could hop on route 30 and head north to Northville and beyond to Wells..
once in Wells you could take a side trip up to Whitehouse. it's a pretty cool place where the NP trail crosses the West Branch of the Sacandaga..

the entire drive north on rte 30 is great....

You won't be too far from Kane Mt one of the fire mountain challenge hills. It is well worth climbing.

Hadley!!!

You'll get a beautiful drive around the Great Sacandaga Lake, a great hike to an awesome summit, and can continue around the other side of the lake home. The swimming by the dam is excellent as well. Very clean lake. Stop in at the store by the bridge for some yummy sandwiches too.

ps. I can give you directions to and fro as well, if you need. Bald eagles tend to nest near the dam too, which are fun to watch.

I agree with Doc, Hadley is one of the finest hikes in the southern Adirondacks with a great reward. It can be s bit busy on weekends, but that should not deter you. There is a nice write-up including maps, elevation profile, photos by a fellow VFTTer at Local Hikes (Albany area). Other shorter hikes nearby on the same webpage include Albany Pine Bush, Christman Sanctuary, Lisha Kill Preserve, Plotter Kill Preserve.

I've actually been up Kane many years ago and remember that as a pretty little peak.

Is the West Branch of the Sacandaga white water or moving water ? I could take my kayak(recreational) if it's moving water, I'm not a whitewater paddler.

Hadley is something I'll consider.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming...

There's a handful of waterfalls that you could visit near Wells area (Tenant Creek Falls, Auger Falls, Austin Falls etc.). See my hiking blog for pics (link below).

Kane mountain near Caroga Lake is a quick hike. And a little further north on Rte 10 is Good Luck mountain.

Bob, Berlin Mnt. on the NY/Mass line is a great hike, although it might be at the limit of your 60 minute drive from Broadalbin. Head east out Rt. 2 from Troy and park at the top of the Petersburg Pass. The trail up is eroded from ATV use, but the views are very nice.

The Upper branch from Arietta to Shaker Place is class I.

The lower branch from Whitehouse to where it meets the Sacandaga is class III.

The Sacandaga below where Route 8 and 30 split to Hope is class III.
