    Do we want more snow?

I heard on the Channel 9 news this morning that at the current rate this could well be a record breaking winter for snow amounts. This is only my 3rd winter of hiking/snowshoeing and I've been totally LOVING IT!!

    mount lafayette

I went up via the Greenleaf Tr on Sunday. The lower part was post-holed pretty bad, but all the way up there was a good hardpack to snowshoe through the new snow on.

    New Waterville map

The same guy who produced this map also produced the recent Wonalancet / Sandwich Range map. Quite a beautiful pair of maps! I wonder if he's got a new project in the works yet...maybe new Ossipee or Belknap range maps? Or how about the ridges heading up to Cardigan?

    Mysterious bat disease

And bad news for hikers who despise the insects that bats love to eat

A return to Cannon Mtn on 2/3/08

Cannon has always had a special place in my hiking heart. It was the peak I first climbed, back in my couch potatoe 20s and the peak I first climbed when I started to get into hiking as I approached my 40th birthday. Both those hikes, as well as the third time I climbed it, were via the Kinsman...

Parking at Drakes Brook/Sandwich tn trailhead?

I parked there last January and it was plowed, just a layer of icy with a dusting of snow on top to contend with

Dorset Peak via Danby 4 Corners

Bare ground, muddy near the bottom. Snow increased higher up. Well-packed by snowmobilers and quite icy. The logging road branches numerous times. We made one mistake. Shortly after starting we came to a fork, the right had round wooden blazes nailed to the tree. Keep to the left here. Then in...

    EMS Burlington to close

I work near the Burlington store and have been going in extra regularly now that they are closing. I've got my eye on a couple big ticket items (tent, overnight pack, etc) and hope the discount gets even better close to the last day. Yesterday I picked up a great Petzl headlamp. Originally about...

*Nearly* Passaconnaway, Saturday January 5, 2007

Thanks for joining me on this hike. It truly was a great hike, despite the lack of success of reaching the summit. That's twice now I've turned back on an attempt to reach Passaconway a 2nd time. Last year it was after bagging all the peaks along the Wonalancet Range route. Not sure what route...

    Add 'em up!

It was a great hiking year (my 4th) for me. Made it up to 111 summits, 69 of which I had never been to before. Finished the NH4Ks in February on Carrigain and got within striking distance of finishing the Y-Alpine 100, the 52 With a View and the T-3000 lists. Also started to do some...

Passaconaway from the Kanc - Sat 1/5/08

Want to head up Oliverian Brook Tr to Passaconaway on Saturday? On the way back I'll consider the side trip to Square Ledge. Snowshoes will likely be necessary. Not so sure about the need for crampons...maybe not. Probably need headlamps at the end. Hit the trail at sunup? No car spots necessary

Flume and Liberty via Osseo and Liberty Spring 12/30

Trail Conditions: There is now a good solid base heading up the Osseo thanks to our group of 6 snowshoers. The ladder near the Downlook was totally covered by snow. This steep section and the section just beyond it was the most challenging part of the day. From Flume to the Basin lot, the trail...

Very enjoyable small hikes in NH-dec 26th-28th

That's a real shame there were no views for you on Cherry Mtn. You get a great look at the Presis up there when the clouds cooperate. Well worth returning for on a later date!

Wild River and Sandwich Range Wilderness

I love that map! It came in very handy in September when I was climbing Paugus and Chocorua. The same guy just published a new detailed map of the Waterville Valley area which uses the same format. I picked one up last week at the Mountain Wanderer and look forward to exploring that area in 08.

    What breed of dog?

A Boston though - not enough coat for the cooler conditions. Also, Bostons have a braecephalic head like the Pugs - not the best choice for an athlete due to issues with breathing and overheating.

    Blue Hill Reservation

Even on weekdays you can expect to encounter several other hikers on the Great Blue Hill. I found the route that gets the least traffic on that hill is the Skyline Tr from the west. Park in the parknride lot and you might not see another hiker until you near the observatory. For a better chance...

    Chippewa Trail

I hiked the Chippewa Tr back on 12/31/06 with una_dogger and MichaelJ and we all found it to be an awesome hike. Well worth the extra effort to find your way up to this peak. Here's a link to the trip report: http://rocksontop.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2252 Can't offer any more current info...

    Mahoosuc Notch on 10/20

PoisonIvy and I are heading into this area on Saturday the 20th. The plan is an ascent via Goose Eye Tr, bag the 3 peaks of Goose Eye Mtn (3870, 3794, 3675), continue on to bag the 2 peaks of Fulling Mill Mtn (3450, 3395) and Mahoosuc Arm (3765) and descend via Speck Pond Tr. 13.3 miles and...

The Link - All in one shot - September 27, 2007

Thanks for a great hike sapblatt! It's not often I get to hike with someone with such fine taste in music :D I also found the trail to be a fun experience, though can certainly understand how annoying it might be to someone just looking for an easy shortcut or bad weather detour. But when...
