    Mt. Clinton Rd ?

Does anyone know if Mt. Clinton Rd is still open? Forest service site says it is closed but NHDOT is in charge of that one and I could not find out if it is in fact closed. If you have knowledge of the road being open the next question would be is it passable by passenger car with snow tires...

Mt. Tecumseh via Mt. Tecumseh Trail

Trail conditions were great! Enough snow to cover most of the rocks and packed so you could bare boot if you wanted (we used microspikes). All water crossings were easy and very little ice anywhere. No blowdowns to be found. If you arrive late the parking lots will be filled. In and out...

Faraway Mtn and Mt Roberts (Ossipee Range)

Dec. 11, 2011 Trails- Cold Spring Trail to Faraway Mtn Trail to High Ridge to Mt Roberts Trail Trail Conditions- Dry trails with a bit of mud in some sections. Some snow from about 2200 feet up. Just a few icy spots. All trails except for Mt Roberts trail are old carriage roads. No...

Mt. Paugus via Kelley, Lawrence, Old Paugus, Big Rock Cave and Cabin Trail

Planned to hike a loop up to Paugus but had to change plans as there is no parking along the road at the Cabin Trail Head. Instead we went to Ferncroft (plenty of plowed parking). Kelley Trail conditions were snow, deep enough to snowshoe (which is what we used). After us microspikes would...

Sandwich Dome via Smarts Brook, Sandwich Mtn. 11/5/11

From Rt 49 to the erratic field at about 4 miles no snow of note. Frozen mud which was not frozen below the top layer was a far bigger problem. Some rocks on water crossings were very slick. Above the 4 mile mark as the climb got steeper more snow but easily barebootable. From junction to...

    Prolotherapy

I will second/third the benefits (long lasting) of Rolfing! The original sessions are as Una Dogger said 10, 90 minute sessions and work over the whole body. I now go 3-4 times a year for "tune ups" (90 min). Before I started I was pretty much incapacitated by the very activities I do...

Outdoor Research - Rocky Mt low gaiters - product review

I would also like to chime in on the service of OR. My wife had a pair of the Flex Tex low gaiters which had 3 of the 4 snaps broken. She has been using them with just the velcro. After reading this thread, I contacted OR and the rep sent me an email and said to send them back, the new order...

    A 3-day, Maine 8-pack, with 6 Moose for Dessert

While there was a Toyota Corolla in as far as we went, I can't imagine doing it with a passenger car I valued (clearance issues)! As Beth says its a comfort/risk level but it was pretty bad in spots. That being said except for the bridge in the middle of the report (day 2) which we didn't do...

    Horsepacking and packanimals

I agree with Kevin, in that a trail used regularly by horses will be trashed! Avoid them if you can. When in Yellowstone we did a number of off the tourist route hikes. The only one we would not do again was a trail that the horse groups used. Extremely dusty (we were covered with a film of...

    AMC Gentian Pond Shelter Closed

Was at the Gentian Pond site Wed. night (7/13). Spoke with the shelter rebuilders and they were hoping to be done by Friday (7/15) which would be earlier than the listed (7/18). Looked to me like they had lots still to do but they are the experts and they work very long days! There are 4 tent...

    Map Questions

I have one of the relief topo maps that I think is the one you are describing. It does appear to have all of the Whites in it. Here is the information I could get off of it. The title is Lewiston (region goes into VT as well as ME and NH) NL 19-10, Series V501P and was produced by HUBBARD of...

    Belknap Range trail question

REK is correct about the trail head if you are only doing the area around Round Pond. Grant Rd is closed to the trail (house/posted). There is a parking lot off Bickford Rd. which is off Rt ll (n or s access). If you are doing Round Pond and Klem you should just continue around to Mack and...

    Swimming in the White Mountains?

A few years back when we took our boys hiking there, East Pond was loaded with leeches.:( Also broken glass from some of the not so bright people that partied there.

is it too early to start a "snow-free trails" thread?

On 5/1 the Ossipee peaks of Black Snout, Shaw, Turtleback and Bald Knob are all essentially snow free ( couple of small patches around Black Snout).

is it too early to start a "snow-free trails" thread?

I would agree with John in NH. I hiked the Belknaps that he didn't on 4/29, (East, West Quarry, Rand, Klem, Mack, Anna, Straightback and Major) and except for one dinner plate size patch, there was no ice or snow in the Belknaps (Gunstock ski trails still has some).

    Belknap Loop

Brook Trail, Major-Straightback Link, Quarry Trail, Red trail, Anna-Straightback Link, Main Trail. Peaks- East Quarry, West Quarry, Rand, Klem, Mack, Anna, Straightback and Major. There was some water and mud on many of the lower trails but all was easily avoidable. Only saw one patch of snow...

    Which One Is Tougher?

I would vote Isolation harder. Owl's Head is just a long walk with a bump in the middle. We did it in the summer by the BP bushwack and the Brutus BW, some mud but not bad. The crossings on the way out were low so easy(traditional route out). I like hikes with "flats" to begin and...

In Frostbite Conditions, Keep Yourself Covered -- Word to the Wise

I really like the idea of a one piece "union suit" for a base layer. The one shown earlier looks like it would be way too hot for winter hiking. I also laughed at the thought of me trying to get in through the neck hole as it doesn't have a zipper:). Someone out there must make a "techwick"...

Isolation via Rocky Branch, Engine Hill Bushwack and Davis Path 2/22/2011

Steve, Skip, James and I with Skipper the dog had a great time on Isolation today. Trails are all consolidated and easy to follow. Two used snowshoes and two microspiked (saw some bare booters also). There are some trails off of the bushwack but the main trail is pretty evident. No problems...
