    Resolution Shelter closed

Due to deteriorating condition, Resolution Shelter is closed, and the immediate area is posted off limits to camping. It was earmarked for removal in 2008, but grandfathered until it became hazardous. That time has apparently arrived. No one could argue about its sorry state, but it's still a...

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

Today's rain comes with low cloud cover so it is hard to make out if the smoke haze has gone, but the wood fire odor is definitely gone.

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

Southern Californians were visiting overnight last night in Franconia. When they woke this morning, they knew what was going on immediately. This has become all too common a phenomenon in SoCal in the fall.

Amenities Chart for WMNF Fee Areas

Confirming an interpretive sign, picnic tables, toilets, small docks, cement pad boat launch, and NO trash at Long Pond. And all the bugs you could ever imagine....

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

It's been coming and going here. I noticed it yesterday morning at home (Franconia), then it cleared by evening when I was kayaking at Long Pond (adjacent to Moosilauke), but returned overnight and is still perceptible. It's bothering a friend with CF. Volcanic ash...smoke...we are indeed...

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

I closed all the windows last night but the smell of smoke pervades the house today. I'm under 3 m atcf from the Franconias and can barely make them out for the haze. Wind shift and rain tonight should take care of it one way or the other.

    Travel Insurance

insuremytrip.com is a good place to start your homework for emergency medical travel insurance. There are per trip policies and annual "frequent flyer" options, e.g. Medex. If you are on Medicare, you may not be aware that Medicare does not pay for emergency medical costs incurred outside the...

Amenities Chart for WMNF Fee Areas

This is beyond the scope of the database but it would be useful nevertheless: whether or not the area is plowed (or tends to be plowed) in winter. I say "tends to be" because in a really large snow storm, the state parking lots in Franconia Notch, for instance, may not see a plow for several...

Amenities Chart for WMNF Fee Areas

Thank you, Roy, this is a big project. Minor input: Kinsman Notch: there is a picnic table; there is an interpretive sign (bomber crash info). I did not see a permanent trash receptacle and I don't recall a bear-proof dumpster ever being there. (If you do not wish to pay to park there, go...

Missing hiker in the western Whites

I was thinking more along the lines of the governor, whose staff does read and tally letters, "sternly worded" or otherwise.

Missing hiker in the western Whites

I promised myself never to get involved in one of these mare's nest threads, but I've broken promises to myself before... And, for once, I happen to agree with the responder to Harrigan's column who essentially says that the so-called "charge 'em" policy is not up to the volunteers, who of...

    Calling weather gurus.....

C'mon up! It won't hang around long. Road plows are out but nobody's bothering to shovel or plow driveways.

    Calling weather gurus.....

Still snowing @ 1200' in Franconia. Heavy wet stuff has been coming down since yesterday around 3 p.m. Intense squalls from time to time. Be prepared for over 2' of new snow at higher elevations in the western Whites. Should you take your snow shoes? Yes.

Help with 1902 photos of Franconia Notch

"Artist's View" is just that, the classic location from which to paint (then photograph) Franconia Notch. It's the southern equivalent to Artist's Bluff at the northern end of the Notch. Browse through these paintings (e.g., Bellows, Dunning, Durand, Johnson, etc.), and you'll see this southern...

    Calling weather gurus.....

It's starting to crank up with heavy snow here, 3" or so down @ 1200'. VT towns just west of Mt Mansfield had snow all day, with about 12" down now. I think Jay may also add two weekdays this week.

    Calling weather gurus.....

I'm seeing differing forecasts for 03580 for Tuesday April 27, varying from 40s and rain to up to 4" of snow with a winter storm watch through the afternoon of 4/28. Anyone want to call this one? (Never take your snows off until May 1.)

Yup, saw two walk across my field Wednedsay night; last night saw three roadside on 112 in the Kinsman Notch.

    Snow in the Notch

3-4" of heavy wet snow in Franconia Notch. Plows working away. 32F. Watch out, lots of people up here took off snows prematurely. It's never over 'til May.
