I was excited to find these 2 photos while looking through my great uncle's old photos. They were taken in July 1902 while he was staying in a cottage in Fairview - looks like Fairview is an area between Woodstock and N Woodstock. Exciting to me because our family spends our annual hiking vacation based at Deer Park condos, and the old hotel in the photos is Deer Park!!

The first photo is marked " Artist's View" and I would love to know where that is. The exact same viewpoint appears on this old postcard I found on the web. If you enlarge the postcard, you can see the pic of an artist (top right) and it says "meeting of the rivers." Ideas anyone?

The second photo is a much better shot of the hotel, but is just labeled Franconia Notch, and looks like it was taken from a higher elevation. Ideas as to where that might have been taken?

Thanks for any help - I need to make a trip to "Artist's View!"

Fairview is indeed just south of North Woodstock, and a spot between Fairview and North Woodstock is the obvious candidate for a "meeting of the rivers", namely the [Franconia Notch branch] Pemi and the "East Branch" Pemi.

Those photos all show essentially the same view, looking mostly-northward toward Liberty and Little Haystack. The smaller peak in the middle distance could be Little Coolidge, but don't quote me. My guess is the photos were taken from the slopes below Parker Ledge, near the cemetery.

map: A is "Fairview" today, B is confluence of rivers, C is a possible viewpoint (though my first guess is closer to the cemetery), and D is mt Liberty.

"Artist's View" is just that, the classic location from which to paint (then photograph) Franconia Notch. It's the southern equivalent to Artist's Bluff at the northern end of the Notch. Browse through these paintings (e.g., Bellows, Dunning, Durand, Johnson, etc.), and you'll see this southern vantage point often:

Thanks, nartreb, nice map! I'm not really familiar with the area south of N Woodstock so it's really helpful.

Waumbek, cool website. I enjoyed brousing through the old pictures.

Well, my biggest fear was that this viewpoint is now in the median strip of I93, but it looks like it's probably not. Will post a picture if I find the spot.
