    Whites - Lonesome Lake

You will have one of the most spectacular views in the Whites from the lake east to Franconia ridge. The snowshoeing most likely will be challenging, and you'll probably bag peaks in the course of one or more of the loops PB describes, not as a goal per se. I don't think you're going to be...

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Yes, as the crow flies, under three miles (in my house). ;) LL hut is a good launch pad for Kinsman Pond and N. Kinsman via Fishin' Jimmy, also for Cannon, a steep but shorter hike, if you want to see lots of skiers on MLK weekend.

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

It is not at all useful for TB to "take the heat" for things he did not do. If there was actually someone else out there spraying herbicide and acting as a self-appointed trail cutter, then that person needs to be identified. I choose to take TB at his word. And I agree with --M, time to move...

People freak out here when it starts to snow.

Yup, already there, but I'm heading out asap to get batteries, bread and lots of booze just in case. I.e., same phenomenon happens here in he mountains. I93 Exit 42 to the liquor and grocery store can be a real jungle.

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Accuweather has shifted the 12-18" center slightly to the northeast of the Whites. Once again, wind may be the story of this storm. And that's not just wind at higher elevations that affects only hikers. I really did see a car blown off I-93 near Exit 30 on Tuesday afternoon. I'd only ever seen...

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

This evening, Accuweather is still putting us (Whites) in the 12-18" belt. But I'm skeptical too.....I don't know what Accuweather bases this on--NWS? http://www.accuweather.com/news-story.asp?article=2

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Yes, I read in the UL this morning that the car I saw off the road near Exit 30 around 3 p.m. was blown off. (That's a known wind tunnel area for those who drive I93 a lot.) I don't think I've ever seen that before. Driver, still in the car, was unhurt, but needed a tow truck to get back on the...

    Whitefield Wind Turbine

I have not been up to the MVG recently, but their website suggests that they are trying to make this windmill one of their attractions rather than detractions, while, at the same time, strategically locating it behind the main hotel building. I don't think you'll see it in the viewscape south to...

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Cars off I-93 today--don't know whether they slid off or were blown off. Those isobars are really packed.

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

Gratitude is classy Hiker Kevin McDonald's response to the 12/22/09 UL article about his rescue (at http://unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Hiker+details+his+night+in+the+Pemigewasset+wilderness&articleId=d06084e2-d413-4607-9c26-09de12c6aa5c): YOUR COMMENTS...

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

This thread has morphed from the OP to the usual rants about NH, F&G, etc., and maybe it's time to re-center it. In this particular incident, which I believe b4me has correctly defined as "rescue," the hiker was deemed to have had an "aggressive" itinerary, but not deemed to be at fault for...

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

Not a perfect analogy by any stretch, but if you know an M.D. personally, ask him or her if more than one patient hasn't rethought their "DNR" order when push came to shove.

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

Doesn't really matter what they'd call it; they'd come out and get you if something screwed up. They'd be courteous and compassionate to you; you'd be real happy to see them. The important part of this incident is that the hiker was prepared for the hike, whatever we want to call it, and the...

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

"Rescued" is the appropriate term. F&G Officers Morse and Ober put themselves on the line to find this hiker: http://unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Nashua+hiker+%27prudent%27+when+harsh+conditions+slowed+him&articleId=1ceb395b-6dfe-4dd6-8913-6c589b6e1a6a
