Mount Greylock Road to be closed in 2007

Prediction: About a decade ago, they shut down a public-housing project in Trenton NJ for "repairs." Long after it should have been re-opened, it was discovered local government workers were using the apartments and lounges, the pool, rec room, etc., for romantic rendezvous (what's the...

    Anyone heard of Quechua?

GNR - King of the Obscure I'm fine, as are Aglaea, Euphrosyne and Thalia Menninger! The diversity of knowledge on this board is one of its great attractions.

need gear?? - Decathalon Sports - going out of business

The last phrase in the last sentence sounds political, especially when there are so many signs that we have never lived through better economic times: 12 million illegal aliens risking life and limb to get American jobs, stock market at all-time high; pension funds awash with cash, etc.

    Mooning the cog

You should see what I deleted Indecent exposure is a crime and if you are convicted, you will be signing up for the sex registry in your hometown for the rest of your life. Which is what I feel would be justified if someone did that to my 82-year-old mom when she chooses to ride the Cog because...

    low ice NH4Ks

Thanks I was thinking of the Garfield Trail because of the long, slow incline rather than steep sections on other trails. But the Garfield Ridge Trail sounds too icy. Are there views into the Pemi near the junction of the two trails?

    low ice NH4Ks

Garfield Trail icy in November? I'm planning a Garfield Trail hike for Nov. 11 with 14-year-old grandson and 9-year-old granddaughter, both seemingly tireless walkers. We're only planning on going to the ridge shelter and back. Would you expect ice on this trail then?

New Wilderness in the Whites killed in Washington

USFS WMNF policy will be to remove the shelters quickly if the legislation passes, as Waumbek said. The policy of waiting until they nearly rot out will not be resumed, I was told when I called.

New Wilderness in the Whites killed in Washington

We can all agree to be thankful for the work that Arghman has done in making accessible to the rest of us the nuts and bolts of this process. He has shown us the places to go to get the actual wording of the legislation, the impact of Wilderness legislation and who to contact if you wish to...

New Wilderness in the Whites killed in Washington

Shelter removals on hold I called the WMNF Androscoggin district just now and was told the plan to remove shelters has been on hold for some time pending the outcome of this bill and that policy will remain in effect as they watch to see whether the bill comes up next year and what parts of it...

    Mt.Cabot Trail

Flak Catcher David Metsky, who has done so much for hikers on this site, his own, and in other ways, is playing the role here of "flak catcher," as outlined in Tom Wolfe's 1970 "Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers." David isn't a proper target here for anger or criticism. He's trying to...

    ...when the lighting strikes...

The National Lightning Safety Institute (???) and the U.S. Golf Association teamed in a public-safety effort that I believe also included the Professional Golfers Association. This link is from that effort: http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/golfsafetyrecommend.html Basically, the USGA...

VFTT Rocks This thread is an example of why VFTT is my favorite website. Thanks to DougPaul and SAR-EMT40 for the science lessons. As usual, I'm in awe. I remember a real-life example of what Little Bear said: A young man was killed by lightning at the New Jersey Shore a couple of years ago...

    Northhampton Beer night?

Don't forget Mommy's Little Monster Mike Ness played around Northampton a lot when he was younger and included it on the Warped Tour. If there's a jukebox, pay homage by playing "Ball and Chain."

    Binoculars

I always thought Zeiss was the clearest, brightest glass and always wished I could afford the top of the line. You wouldn't think you would have to tell people this but once you buy them, keep this in mind, never stand binoculars on end, lay them down. They can't "fall up," and knock the prisms...
