Opening new and "lost" abandoned trails

Sounds like a great idea. But I suggest that you hook up with an established trail maintenance club (other than AMC, if you wish) and get some experience first. There are plenty of hard working, no-frills clubs in the Whites and elsewhere that could use the help and provide you with valuable...

    Old Downes Brook Slide Locale?

There will definitely be snow on top. Rollins still has a foot or more in places. Downes Brook Slide Trail is as high or higher and on a steep north exposure. Should be a challenging trip this time of year. As dms says, it's easy to find. It's right where the map says it is, just before the...

    50 mile hike recommendations?

Wild River I'm going by a 20+ year memory here but I recall that the Wild River Trail and Moriah Brook Trail and on up to the summit of Moriah were both very pretty and not overly challenging. Haven't been up the Baldface range from that side but there sure looks like some nice loop possibilities.

    50 mile hike recommendations?

Ah, the 50 miles are a non-negotiable requirement. The route I suggested could be modified to meet your requirement but now I think you're better off with something along the line of Arron's suggestion. Anything on the AT between Gorham and Baxter could be considered. Road crossings could be...

    50 mile hike recommendations?

I can't help trying to fit your parameters into my back yard, so heare goes: West to East (a totally arbitrary decision) -- Start at Route 113 (Holderness Rd). Morgan Tr - Crawford Ridgepole Tr - Sandwich Notch Rd - Algonquin Tr - Bennett St Tr - Flat Mtn Pond Tr - McCrillis Tr - Rollins Tr -...

    Moose behavior question

NHG, if you get a chance to read Seasons of the Moose by Jennie Promack, she describes meeting and then regularly visiting an orphan moose calf for a period of about a year. That youngster was quite resourceful and made it to adulthood. Geist, in Moose: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation, describes...

    Moose behavior question

New England moose usually bear their young in late May to Early June so this one was definitely an early moose. It's surprising you didn't see its mother. Unlike deer, who leave a fawn in dense cover while mother feeds (a deer's best defense is to flee -- a hard thing to do when you have a...

Volunterring to work help clear/ maintian trails w/o AMC

WODC's first trail day of the season, Spring Cleaning Day, is scheduled for May 14. We meet at the Ferncroft parking lot at 8:15. The day consists mostly of winter blowdown removal. There's quite a few on Dicey's Mill Trail and I know Larry, the adopter, would love some help. And so would I on...

    reputable online gps dealer?

Twice I've bought garmins from amazon. Their price was within $10 of the lowest I could find and their service has always been reliable and quick. Last time, the receiver showed up in my mailbox 3 days after I clicked the mouse. Don't know if they stock Lowrance.

    Mt. Passaconaway

Other ways Proszach, there's plenty of other ways. Try Old Mast and Walden to bag a 3K along the way (come on, you KNOW you'll be doing the 3K list eventually). Or how about Wonalancet Range and Walden? Or try Old Mast - Square Ledge - Walden. Say hello to the perigrine falcon for me. And then...

    Mt Mexico

A real nice (and easy) loop is Big Rock Cave Trail - Whitin Brook Trail - Cabin Trail. But don't do it during periods of high water. There are four brook crossings, one on BRC and three on Whitin Brook, that are tricky. The trip Ten Peaks mentioned would be Cabin - Lawrence - Old Paugus - Big...

A bit of a Beech tree mystery

Hey Mr. Spider, check out http://www.bearcamptrackers.org/050109d.html. It should help verify the porky theory and also partially explain why my VFTT posting has been down this winter. I saw a 30' high hemlock in Jericho, VT this winter that was totally consumed by a porky. Nothing left but a...

    Mansfield via Sunset Ridge

Thanks everyone. I think I'll take Rich's advice and try to pick up a good map on Thursday during my drive up. It'll probably be a up and down on Sunset Ridge but the option of Laura Cowles or Halfway House are worth looking at. I just hope Friday isn't too windy.

1941 White Mountain National Forest map

Thanks, Roy. Nice map! What caught my attention was all the orange/brown colored areas which the legend says is closed to public use. Sure would have put a crimp on my bushwhackin!

    Mansfield via Sunset Ridge

Gonna be in Jericho on Friday and I'm looking for a hike. Can someone tell me how far the road walk is from wherever you park to the trail head? Any info on the loop along the ridge and down Maple Ridge would also be appreciated. I'll probably be solo and will definitely be in unfamiliar...

AMC -vs- the snowmobiles (Union Leader article)

It's the only way to log. Fellerbunchers do the work of both choppers and skidders, only much more efficiantly. Forwarders are ATV log trucks -- pretty scary things to encounter in the woods when you're not expecting them. I suppose some people consider all my posts to be spam. :D :D :D

Just watch out for the fellerbunchers and forwarders.

    Go Bode!

Bode was on NHPR's Front Porch a while back. A real down-to-earth guy. I enjoyed listening to his rememberance of teaching himself bushwhacking and navigation skills when he was a wee little tyke. I wish him the best.

    GPS Warning

An "innermost location," frytz? I don't wanna hear the specifics. But back to GPS and the big attack, I derive an immense amount of assurance knowing that the nuke is gonna miss me by 30'. Opps, I meant METERS. Good. Now I feel safe.

    GPS Warning

The article talks about "selective areas," not an entire system shutdown. The headline is a little misleading. I wouldn't trust my life to something that runs on batteries anyway. Now that the weather is getting colder, I have enough trouble keeping my digital camera going.
