Thanks, Roy. Nice map! What caught my attention was all the orange/brown colored areas which the legend says is closed to public use. Sure would have put a crimp on my bushwhackin!
 
The '38 hurricane certainly did a job on the WMNF! I think the marked areas were closed both because of fire danger from slash and because timber salvage operations were underway. I read somewhere recently that all-women logging crews worked in that salvage operation but I can't recall where.

Now I remember: it's in the most recent issue of the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources newsletter, the Old Stone Wall, which is not yet archived.
