    Topo

Same here. I'm generally satisfyed with the NG TOPO NE package. Many useful features; including search, route planning, profiles. The downside is that they "seamlessly" join USGS 1:24000 quads so you end up with various contour intervals, including some metric. The functions will convert...

    Stinkyfeet interview on NHPR tonight

Hey poison ivy: Is the scene in your avatar real or is that a stage set? And where was it taken? Mighty impressive.

    New England Bears?

The bears in the Whites have never bothered me or my food, even though I've had a couple of close encounters with them and often see their tracks in the late spring snow and mud. They occasionally cause problems with sloppy homeowners in my neighborhood and we had one a few years ago who didn't...

    Chocorua

Thanks, spongebob. Great pictures of a fun hike with some wonderful people. I'm sure we all thank you for NOT showing pictures of any of us not-so-gracefully sliding down the ice on Brook Trail and I'm sure Marilyn thanks you for not including a picture of her torn pants. Excellent foresight...

    What is "Wilderness?"

And the words always start me thinking about Aldo Leopold first; and then Richard Costley and Bill Worf, two Forest Service managers who had to turn a Congressional bill into a working national management plan. Neither ever gave up their fight to keep the Wilderness Act true to the ideals and...

    Map Waterproofing

Artist supply stores sell a spray fixative(?). I used it a few years back to preserve an inch-thick slab of a punky carpenter ant colony. Don't know how effective it would be for waterproofing maps but it sure is easy to apply.

    What is "Wilderness?"

The top of Everest is peopled by a race that thoughtlessly discards its refuse, whether that refuse be tents, food packaging, oxygen bottles or corpses. Everest never was about wilderness. Nor is/was it about immersing one's self in the natural world. It's about challenge. It was about a quest...

    Castle Trail Mt Jefferson

Read a trip report within the past week, probably on the AMC boards. The poster reported breaking trail to the castles and turning around. Yeah, sounds like a long day. Bring your snowshoes.

    Presi's This Summer

In general, camping below treeline is allowed all year long in the WMNF. It's camping ABOVE treeline which is restricted to 2' snow cover. Read the regs at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/white/recreation/land_above/backcountry_rules.html to see where it is legal to camp.

    Doublehead, Squam, Percival, Morgan

I'm forsaking the four kays this weekend for a walk along one of my favorite ridges, with a slightly different twist: a semi- or total bushwhack from the Percival trailhead to where the Doublehead Trail leaves the old highway. Total milage: about 9.5. Total elevation gain: about 2K. Pace...

I like your pace, Mohamed. But I'm gonna have to learn to eat while hiking. You never stop!

Value of a Beard on the Trail

My beard definitely adds warmth in the winter. That's why I start letting it grow long in October and mow it in the spring. But as arm observed, it tends to freeze to the balaclava. All you have to do is hold your bare hand, palm side, to your chin for a minute and it will free itself. If it's...
