Feeling that "wilderness experience" in the Whites

Are you sure of this? The Adirondack park has 6 million acres in it. More than a little of that is designated as wilderness. Not Federally designated wilderness but how different could state designated wilderness be from federal. There's a lot of large untrailed areas there, I'm not sure if I'd...

    catskill dayhikes from nyc?

I'd say it's doable, it's about 3 hours from the city. You can lessen the time by picking the closer to the interstate trailheads. For me, I do more local stuff for day hikes, Breakneck Ridge, Harriman, Shawagunks.

Has anybody ever thought about doing this?

I think that stashing gear/ supplies is a noble and time honored technique, however: 1. I believe that everywhere I go in the NE it's not allowed or frowned upon. Can't speak for ME, though I would think it would be rude at least on paper company land. 2. There are safety issues in winter...

    Rainer, Hood, Shasta, fall 2005??

OK, I doubt very much I'll be making this. I'll be heading out there for a week or so at the beginning of September, looking at scramble routes the Alpine Lakes and northern cascades. However if there's any NE get togethers previous to the trip, I'd love to participate. Especially towards the...

    First and last solo!

My first solo had me waking up every 45 minutes terribly worried about the (had to be rabid) porcupines rubbing up against my tent making barking baby crying noises. I won't even get into how much hearing Johnny Cash before bed wierded me out.... And I'm always more nervous at trailheads than...

    crampon bag?

Desalad- check the NY trail conditions for what may be your crampon... The inner tube is a great idea, I have the little rubber protectors but I don't use them much, an inner tube should not only protect the points but will make good fire starter in a pinch.

    crampon bag?

Most of the time I just wrap them in their straps, points facing points and throw them on top of my pack under the lid. Generally works well for me. Sometimes, bundled the same way I strap them to the lower outside of my pack, where a sleeping pad would be traditionally strapped. On occasion...

    Adirondack Road Plowing

Last weekend the Elk Lake road was plowed to the Clear Pond gate, this is standard in winter from what I understand. Coreys was plowed to the bridge just before the summer trailhead last winter and the road to upper works was also plowed to the trailhead last winter- I believe this is standard.

Dix range 2/26-27 and finishing my W46!

We followed Pin Pin's tracks over the Dixes last weekend: We left a decent track from macomb to the beckhorn and then out to the Elk Lake trail head. Expect that track to be snowed in from East Dix to the Hough- Beckhorn Col. We wandered in places (sundays night snow obscured the established...

    Hiking with a partner.

Not mentioned yet is who are the adults, what is their experiance/fitness level and their expectation of the hike? The same goes for the kids. In a group that size group dynamics can make or smash any plan or any attempt to manage a crisis. Designating a leader is most valuable in the case of a...

    Hiking with a partner.

This is another situation depends thing. A story: Last October I joined Sli74 on a pemi outer/inner loop backpack. I told her I may need to jet a day early back to NYC since it such a damn long ride. There were 5 people on this trip. 2 were at a generally slower pace, two fast one hovered in...

    The cost of safety

I do the decide in the lot for snowshoes pretty often. Most of the bring/don't bring I do at home. Once I decide I'm going someplace I usually decide that what style I'll be doing it in: everything and the sink, down to full UL style. I think in many cases the safety factor cuts both ways. The...

    Rainer, Hood, Shasta, fall 2005??

That week/ time frame may be good for me. I'd prefer hood over Rainer even though I have free lodging available ot me near Rainier. Skimom: I did my glacier course through AAI out of belingham. I thought it was great, I would recommend Jeremy A. as a guide. If you can make efforts to fill up...

    Rainer, Hood, Shasta, fall 2005??

I'm planning on getting out to the Cascades sometime this year and Hood sounds interesting, I'd be willing to plan my time out there around this. I've already completed a level one glacier course and was considering another one this year. I'm not as interested in Ranier but what the hey.

    Seema celebrates #67!

I have the means to get it onto DVD, but currently I have no way to get it onto my computer (my VCR doesn't do S video which I would need for this). If you could get it onto a firewire drive in quicktime format I could easily transfer it to a laptop next time we're in the same state
