Video - pulling moose from frozen lake

Interestingly, the video that followed the moose rescue was of the two hikers lost on Mt. Hood, walking out after spending the night in a snow cave, as in JayH's post. teejay

    toll increase in NH

Mike, I believe you were misinformed. My daughter, who hasn't lived in NY for 10 years has one. The Terms and Conditions page doesn't mentioned any residence requirement and will even accept Canadian dollars for payment. teejay

    toll increase in NH

E-Z Pass If you only use the tolls occasionally in NH or MA you might want to consider getting one from NY. It doesn't cost anything so it might be cheaper than paying the $25 and saving a bit on the toll. teejay

    The new smokeless disel cog

Ed, Yes, I know that there are many positives for the Cog's operator by switching to diesel. I was being a bit facetious, but I'm glad to hear they will keep some operating steam stock. I wonder, though, with the obvious economic benefits, if the general public will see much of anything, like...

    The new smokeless disel cog

Somehow I assumed when it was first mentioned that the cog was going to start burning oil that it would be used to make steam not run a diesel engine, that they would be converting the coal boilers to oil. To me, riding up the cog powered by diesel is like being on one of those "replica"...

    Coreys Road advisory

On my last visit in to Coreys Road, many of the sites were occupied by semi-permanent looking structures that obviously weren't the typical tent camper's. I stopped at the first one, on the left, just over the bridge, and chatted with the very friendly, hospitable people there (three couples)...

    Seward, Wed. Oct.3

Here's my plan: I'll head north on Tuesday and plan to arrive at the Cathedral Rock (near Wanakena) trailhead about noon. Make the short climb to the fire tower. Then head in to Coreys Road and set up camp. Wednesday morning, get an early start and climb Seward via Calkins Brook route...

    Identify this Gizmo?

My guess The pieces look like they came from some sort of disposable container or packaging that have been wired together. The holes may have been for ventilation. The fact it was found near water suggests that they may have to do with fishing. Part of a live bait container? Maybe the guy...

    purchasing VFTT bumper sticker?

Patch/sticker order Darren, I'd be happy to take charge of the patches and stickers. I'd prefer to take cash and checks but would also accept Paypal (why pay them their cut, anyway). If you can get the order rolling and arrange to have them shipped to me, I can start booking and shipping the...

    ADK's This weekend

Yup, heading up Sunday early afternoon. Eighth Lake. Looking forward to a firetower or more, seeing if I can stay afloat in a kayak, and can smell free beer from 50 miles away. Slamdog, yours or Wardy's? Camp, I mean. It doesn't matter which of you has the beer. teejay

    It's debatable

or is it? The latest issue of Adirondack Explorer just arrived. Their feature "It's Debatable" pits James Close and peak_bgr to argue the question, "Should hikers be encouraged to climb the 100 Highest?" You might guess who's agin it and who's fer it. Unfortunately, it's not available online...

    Hanging Spear Falls

Rik, I found the same reference as peakbgr. Going a bit further, a page or two down on Google, somehow I found an Eric Gordon Milstrey who received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1987. He was an entymologist. In his acknowledgements he credits his wife Susan for her help in...

Has anybody been to the Wild Center?

Yes, I did go there a few weeks back. The Carl Heilman slideshow and accompanying music was absolutely spectacular. It alone was worth the price of admission. I could have spent a lot more time there but the people I was with were expecting more. It is not the Adirondack Museum, by any...
