Recommendations for must-do Sierra Nevada day hikes?

Mount Tallac on the south shore of Tahoe is almost exactly 3500' vert and 10 miles roundtrip, IIRC. The summit is right around 10K and overlooks the lake - simply stunning. I believe you walk past scenic Fallen Leaf Lake en route, up Cathedral Bowl, and have great views into the Desolation...

    Help with peak ID please

I agree. There's a nice overlook on North Tripyramid just after the Pine Bend Brook and whatever-its-called-from-Waterville Valley trail coincide, and before it gets steep. It has all of those mountains, from Carrigain to the Prezzies to Tremont and company, so it's easier to distinguish them...

Is there a best red-lining map?

It's no longer being published, but there is a map that came out about a year ago that I use for redlining. It is pretty darn good, and has (nearly?) every trail in the WMNF. Works really well for my single-sided, big-picture needs. I don't have it with me, so I don't have the name/publisher...

Hammer Time (Favorite short, steep trail sections)

You wouldn't want to descend that one, though. How about Mt. Willey from the south (not coming over Field first)? Pretty sustained climb all the way from 302. Carrigain from the north (Desolation Trail). Makes for a longish day loop, but a really enjoyable hike otherwise. Zeacliff Trail...

    'Classic Hikes' ignores Adirondacks

No trails listed in Maine, either. Maybe the Baxter red tape scared him off. For NY, I think the Great Range Traverse is the most 'classic', if not the best hiking in the state.

    Hiker Falls into Tuckerman Crevasse

This is from April 2008 and shows the Lunch Rocks at bottom, and a line of skiers hiking up the Headwall, with several crevasses showing. Perhaps he fell into one of these? (My friend nearly fell into one that gave way underneath him.) Old picture from late-July, 1997, showing the snow caves...

Sunapee ski slopes hiking and skiing

I've never had a problem using the ski slopes there before, but I've never tried during the ski season. It's also been a few years, so take that for what it's worth. My hunch is that you won't have a problem 9 times out of 10, and this person was just a not-quite-informed underling.

    Another WMNF photo quiz

11 must be Sabbaday Falls. I've seen some pretty short people there.

    QR Codes on the Trail

I'm trying to figure out the difference between this conversation and the one a few years ago about the evils/benefits of GPS units.

    Jefferson/Admas/Madison from Apppalachia?

Not this year, but I've done this trifecta in wintertime from Appalachia going Madison - Adams - Jefferson. Ascent via Valley Way to do the standard Madison/Adams pairing. The weather was iffy, but when I got to Thunderstorm Jct, rather than descend down Spur, I went for it. The hardest part...

    Katahdin Route

That sounds plenty feasible, and would make for a fantastic trip (barring bad weather). The second day is certainly ambitious, but if you start early and are strong hikers, it can be done. On the hike out, take a little side trip to Sandy Stream Pond for a great panoramic view of the range.

    Snowmagedon Reports 1_12

Looks like central and northern Vermont won this storm. 18-30" along the mountaintops from Killington to Jay. Totals here.

BU Outing Club tackles Mount Adams

A friend directed me to this article about a group of Boston University students backpacking on Mount Adams. They didn't do it exactly the way that I would, but I thought it was a really well-done video and article. Hopefully this link works.

    Cardigan State Park in winter

By the way, I always recommend going up to Rimrock/South Peak first, then looping over to the main summit. Same trailhead, but bear right/straight at the first trail junction to get to Rimrock. It makes for a fantastic loop and adds very little mileage. The scamper up to the main summit may...

    Day hike around Woodstock, VT

Pico from the height of land on Route 4 at Sherburne Pass is probably the best option for the timeframe you mentioned. For something much more mellow, Mount Tom right in Woodstock is a nice place to spend a few hours.

    Cardigan State Park in winter

No, they close the road in from Canaan in the wintertime. However, there is a parking area at the closure (good for 6-8 cars). It adds about 2/3 of a mile in each direction to the approach to the summer trailhead.

Grand Canyon - South Kaibab/Bright Angel Loop Day Hike

Very nice. I'm hoping to go there with the Mrs. in August. We won't be hiking 19 miles, of course, in August, but maybe down to Skeleton Point and back.

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

Hi Roy, you're probably right that more sections than I indicated are more regularly broken out than I suspect. Maybe I just tend to hit them after storms. :D And certainly more side trails are broken out, though that doesn't help the thru-hiker. FWIW regarding trail maintenance, I enjoy the...

    Moriah 2/3/2012

Nice! As somehow who believes that the views from Moriah are just a myth, thanks to only hiking that mountain in the rain, I loved these pictures. It's fun to see the Prezzies from a slightly different angle than the rest of the Carter Range.

Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

Again, JacobH, you are making a terrible analogy. Preserving beaches and Baxter and Monadnock and fighting against Northern Pass does not equate with some erosion on Mittersill in scope or quality. The argument from greater to lesser just doesn't work. The amount of attention and vitriol...
