Lunch anyone? What to eat on a winter day hike

This is what I HAVE to do. I find that I don't feel like eating at all when I'm hiking in the winter but if I don't, I bonk. Lots of snacks and lots of water. I also carry a bunch of energy gels (which I buy by the box), I can always force one of those down.

    Pulk/Sled Question

We are brand new to pulling Pulks (Pulkkes) and thought about using some glide wax. Do people wax their pulks? Do you think it might make the pulling easier if I put some glide wax on the pulks or is this a sissy question?

    Adams via Lowes?

My wife and I (and the dog) used Lowes Path to hike Adams 2 weeks ago, 1/23/09. It was well broken out at that time and we saw 5 people headed to the camp. They have gotten a lot of snow since then but not much in the past week and no big storms predicted before your trip so I would guess that...

    Goggle fog

I'm trying it I already own two pair of goggles (one much better than the other) but it never occurred to me to take both, considering everything else I carry, the weight is minimal, thanks for the suggestion! I'll report back on the outcome.

    GPS shopping

Another 60CSX vote We own two 60 CSXs and think there is nothing better. We use rechargable batteries, the recargables don't last as long in the real cold but we had them on Adams on Friday with the GPS out in the elements all day. I try to keep the replacements as warm as possible and I...

    GPS question...Osseo Trail?

North Twin Trail North Twin trail is about 3/4 miles off on both Mapsource and NatGeo. Hiking with my wife earlier this year, after the first "high water" brook crossing, we came to where it goes back across the brook. Knowing I was already on the right side and if I crossed here I would have...

Wildcat - accessing via ski area?

CINDERSMOM and I traversed the Wildcat Ridge last January with Cinder. I was a little worried about having the dog along when we came into the ski area. We were standing there discussing whether or not to change from crampons to snowshoes when a member of the ski patrol came over, petted the dog...

    Too cold to hike?

Maybe a little too cold I would say that judging by Friday's trip reports, a lot of hikers decided to play on VFTT than on the trails. We cancelled our 4K plans for Friday too, but did go BC skiing today. Great thread, thanks.

Preferred way to Adams in Winter?

No set date, when ever it looks right is the plan, this will be my last 4K. Sure appreciate your input and will be watching the trail condition reports. OMW

    forced to bareboot by MSRs

I hope you left the body (with his snowshoes on) where others could see and learn from this. :)

MSR Denali Evo Strap Keeps Breaking!

I just took a closer look at the pics and see that yours are ripping right at the hole. Cut the strap between two holes and then use the last hole and test it to make sure the strap doesn't hit the shoe during extreme pivotting. Mine didn't break at the hole, I had a little meat left over. I was...

MSR Denali Evo Strap Keeps Breaking!

Common Both my forward straps are broken in the same way. It is caused by the strap hitting the shoe when they pivot beyond a certain point. Hold the binding in your hand and pivot the shoe to the max and you'll see that the shoe can hit the forward strap and cause it to rip right where it...

Preferred way to Adams in Winter?

Excellent replies Thanks for the input, just what we were hoping for. We'll take this info and make some informed decisions before we start up. Not to worry, we do have the required gear, winter is our favorite hiking season. Really loved the basketball/bearing suggestion. We always carry and...

Preferred way to Adams in Winter?

Below is our chosen route to take with a small party this winter, We would rather not break miles of trail (some would be fine though). What do others think, or what is your preferred route to Adams in the Winter? Tried a search but, no luck. UP: Valley Way, Scar, Air Line Down: Lowe’s Path...

    Snowshoe vs barebooting

I have been scolded in the past while wearing crampons and carrying my snowshoes. There was three of us in the party ascending a trail, two were wearing crampons and one was wearing snowshoes when we met a VFTT user and longtime hiker descending. We were leaving footprints (not postholes)...

    forced to bareboot by MSRs

I believe it is not so much the narrow snowshoes as it is the short snowshoes. When I wear my 22" MSR's the back of the lead shoe is out beyond the front of my rear shoe and I tend to walk in a normal bare boot stride. When I wear my 30" Tubbs I have to keep my feet apart or I step on my own...

Looking for a hiking buddy during my vacation week

monday hike The weather does look good for Monday. I am also on vacation and would be interested in Monroe as I still need that peak for my winter 4K list. Is the road still open to the Cog railway? CINDERSMOM (using Oldmanwinters computer) Nancy

    Grivel G10 or Microspikes?

Go for both, you'll use them. I have all three and never use the stableicers anymore, too heavy.
