    Spring Conditions

This might be the week to combine hiking and kayaking, if you're willing to schlep a boat up the trail and foolhardy enough to ride it back down in the torrent. Ice went out locally this weekend – I'm now twenty-four hours late with my paddle oiling ...

What makes a quality knife ? Metallurgy, Advertising, the Sharpener ?

Honesty compels me to note that you have a lot of company in that. Present company excepted, but that's 'cuz my relatives across the water would start throwing sharp things at me if I joined you in that.

    Hikers rescued from Mt Pierce

I have for years advocated Pierce as a good destination for newbies wanting a small, relatively safe taste of winter hiking. After this event, it looks like I'd better add a cautionary note to that suggestion.

    Reflection on/in the Ten Essentials

From Norway comes this suggestion to add a reflective vest to your pack. If you need someone to rescue you, it can make a big difference at night. The video at the link demonstrates this for both night vision-equipped helicopter crews and ground searchers. Even though helicopters don't play the...

Spring is roaing in like a lion!

The NWS has the high in North Conway today progged at 48,which I think is more likely than the (undoubtedly extrapolated) Weather Channel number. The feds have issued a notice about possible ice dam flooding for all of NH and half of Maine.

    weather forecast

If any of you have a grip on the weather for the weekend at hand, do let the NWS know. They've been waffling with this particular one more than an IHOP franchisee. I can't recall a situation this winter that has had them this flummoxed so close to the event...

I'm 220 pounds without a pack. I have been grateful for every centimeter of my 195 Annums this winter. But then, I cut my teeth on 215 cm Bonnas. :)

    Winter Boots

I've recently reverted to putting a felted wool insole in my winter boots of all types. It adds a considerable amount of warmth and was standard practice when I was a kid growing up in Minnesota. I put them under the insole that comes with the boot and adjust my sock thickness to accommodate...
