What Ever Happened to the Bearcamp River Trail?

Skimming the AMC White Mtn. Guide, 26th Ed., shortly after its publication in 1998, I was excited by its big write-up - nearly 7 pages - of a new 17-mile trail sponsored by the Sandwich Land Trust Committee and "constructed through the efforts of countless volunteers." It more or less followed...

    The Attitash Trail

Belated discovery Dugan, rocksnrolls, Poison Ivy and I did this same hike yesterday, before I found this TR, and J&J's account could pass nearly verbatim for ours, except that, instead of cannolis, we feasted on Dugan's homemade almond-crusted coconut cream pie with chocolate ganache. Also, we...

    Mullen (Baxter, ME) 300 of 300 ME "P"--done :)

You finished with a flourish, both the hike and the report. I've enjoyed your vivid snapshots of corners of the Maine outdoors I'll never see. Congratulations!

Candidate for 52WAV! Mount Oscar Bushwhack 10 June 2012

I'm already at least halfway down the slope! :) Yes, thinking Sugarloafs, I dyslexically typed Doubleheads (which I had a nice view of Sat. from Halls Ledge) - there is a resemblance. Nat Geo Topo does show that "sandpit" which is now something better. Thanks again.

Candidate for 52WAV! Mount Oscar Bushwhack 10 June 2012

Interesting approach to Mt.Oscar. I take it that logging road starts across Zealand Road from the trail west to the Sugarloaves? At the south end of your track you just decided to turn around, to head back to a closer taking-off spot for your 'whack to the col? Total distance about 6 miles...

    Barren (yeah, that Barren)-Baxter, ME

A stirring tale made even better with your photos aligned and inserted. That slide looks sweet. How frustrating to find yourself easily at its top, just 0.1 mile from the summit, only to encounter an Iron Curtain of wood. I'm surprised you look so cheerful in that summit self-portrait.

Drinking Water from the Connecticut River

That's a nice stretch, which I enjoyed when some friends and I paddled it on this same weekend, four years ago. We brought our own water and I wouldn't drink the River even if filtered. We used if for cleaning, but heated it first. There are several places where you could get water.

    Help with peak ID please

My guesses too. I think the more distant peak on the right is probably Kearsarge (Pequawket). No Carrigain, which would be at least 20 degrees north of Kancamagus.

Hudson (NMWoods) & Pt 1560 (Eagle Lake) ME

An experienced hiker I know won't go on a hike where the driving time would exceed the hiking time. I take it you do not follow that rule? Your adventures would make a good reality TV series. I'd watch, anyway.

A great start to a TR by a real hiker! (Realer than me, certainly.:)) Glad to see you back on your quest for summits few of us will ever visit.

    Coe / Brothers / Fort - inquiry

I cast my vote against this hike, having done it and having visited Fort twice, both times with the trip to the WWII wreck. The 'whack/herd-path to Fort from No. Brother can be readily followed if you look down, but you'll be poked and prodded most of the way, as it is thickly grown in (and my...

    CT River multiday paddle

Right you are. 51 miles, to be exact. The River was really moving, especially for the first 10-15 miles, as I recall.

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

Here is the relevant text of what the Senate passed (including yesterday's two amendments, but omitting Sections 3 and 4, which appoint that House committee I mentioned to study possible additional legislation): I don't think any court asked to interpret Section IV above would look at it in a...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

What the current Bill really says Let me try to clarify what the Senate appears to have passed. Its Judiciary Committee last week scrapped in its entirety the broad House Bill that has been the subject of this thread until yesterday, replacing it with a much narrower bill that amends an...

    Wellesley MA trails?

The Wellesley Trails Committee page linked by Mohamed Ellozy contains a further link to a page that describes the Charles River Link. This excellent trail, dedicated in 2009, runs for 16 miles from the Bay Circuit Trail in Medfield to Newton Lower Falls. From the latter end, it quickly enters...

    Hiker Falls into Tuckerman Crevasse

I wouldn't read too much into that line from the article in his memory. I took it as merely a paraphrase of the increasingly popular maxim: "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission", which I have seen attributed to the late Rear Admiral Grace Hopper.

    CT River multiday paddle

At 449 feet, the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge is very long indeed. When we paddled under it in 2008, it was billed as the longest covered bridge in the U.S., but a longer one was constructed in Ohio that same year. We had avoided the Connecticut because we thought it was too big for good...

    Hiker Falls into Tuckerman Crevasse

Today's Boston Globe contains a profile, including photo, of the late Norman Priebatsch, who was a remarkable man. (I attach no link because I think the Globe now requires a subscription for on-line access. I read a paper copy.) It sheds little new light on his accident, except to note that he...

    CT River multiday paddle

The Upper Valley Land Trust river-access-only campsites were terrific, on both our 2002 and 2008 trips. We stayed at four of them in all and each was great. We had them to ourselves - don't know if we were just lucky or they are underappreciated. Memorial Day is early for canoe-campers, I guess.

    CT River multiday paddle

"VT/NH border area" covers all of both States, since the Conn. River is their border from top to bottom. I think you may be interested in only the upper portion, but if you are considering the River's whole length above the Mass. border, I can give you relevant information from two three-day...
