    Blue snow

Hmm...you could try. It just might work. I usually just let the camera figure out the appropriate white balance. It's no big deal if you shoot in RAW. The white balance doesn't actually get applied to the image, it only writes that information into the file's metadata. But if you shoot in...

    Blue snow

This happens when you set your camera to auto white balance. Just increase the color temperature in the RAW editor or shift the color balance towards yellow a bit and red a bit.

    Konquering Kaaterskill - 1/9/10

In the first picture, it's Plattekill Mountain and Overlook Mountain (Plattekill is in front of Overlook) on the left, then Indian Head with all the bumps, then Twin. The edge of Sugarloaf is visible on the right. In the bottom picture, it's the southern Catskills. One can make out Peekamoose...

    Photos from Giant and RPR

Haha thanks. Maybe VFTT should start printing calendars that features the whole Northeast.

Aye, thanks. The only one worth posting in color too! Had to shift the color balance towards yellow in order to get the greens out in the trees. Otherwise, everything would just look blue.

Thanks! I think that picture was actually taken heading up Rocky Peak. I should have posted the pictures in chronological order. From top to bottom it's: 1) summit of Giant, 2) near the summit of RPR looking at Giant, 3) summit cairn on RPR, 4) heading up RPR.

The skies are almost too dramatic! I attribute that to my use of a polarizing filter. Turns the sky dark in b&w. Mimimal editing was needed. Just some curve adjustments.

Hi all, Figure I'd switch things up a bit and share some pictures instead of posting a trip report from my most recent Adirondack adventure! Feel free to critique!

Catskills bushwack to the Cornell-Slide col

Methinks this would make a great bushwhack. Some folks have reported that the slide is still somewhat visible in the winter when the mountain is snow covered. Anyone up for setting out to find the nearly 200 year old slide on Slide?

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

Headaches run in my family. :( If I push myself hard on a hike and I don't eat enough constantly, I'll get one. So I'll pop two Excedrin and away the headache goes!

Great Range Traverse Loop (almost) ADK Weekend

The footing seems to be the biggest factor between the DP and the GR. In the Catskills, you've got these layers of rocks that are almost like steps while the Adirondacks, you've just got these flat slabs of rock with hardly any footing. When I did the GR as a backpack last summer, I thought...

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

Oh, I see. Yes, they definitely were highbush blueberry, the commonly cultivated blueberry. Can't say they were in rows but I figured maybe the seeds may have been carried there by birds or something since there are farms all around the base of the mountain. There are swamps high up on the...

Great Range Traverse Loop (almost) ADK Weekend

Sweet! So what's more difficult: the Great Range in a day or the Devil's Path in a day?

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

Came across some domesticated blueberries today on Schunemunk Mountain in Orange Co., NY. The bushes were growing 6 feet tall in places, the tallest I'd ever seen. Wonder how they got there high up on that ridge. Definitely not "wild".

    Hudson Valley Beer Night!

By the way, went to the BK Brewery a few weekends ago during their open house. For $20 you can sample 6 beers. They also give a mini tour of the operation where they make their "local" beers.
