    Storm King on Black Friday

Nah, never happened. According to wikipedia: In 1965 the mountain became the focus of a landmark environmental battle when local activists formed the Scenic Hudson Preservation Coalition (today known as just Scenic Hudson) to fight against plans by utility Consolidated Edison to cut away part...

    Suffern-Bear Mountain Traverse

Hey all, Anyone up for a Suffern-Bear Mountain traverse in Harriman? Was supposed to do it this weekend but it was canceled last minute. Totally bummed... Since the days are getting pretty short, the hike would start pretty early (7 AM the latest) and the last hour would probably require...

    Storm King on Black Friday

Storm King is definitely a nice hill. I think I read somewhere that Butter Hill was the original name of Storm King.

Didn't TFR get one of these for this last birthday?

Converting degrees/min/secs coordinates to different format?

Yeah, I tried writing a javascript function on my website to do it but I failed miserably once I got to the part where I had to calculate the meridional arc... Luckily, I found an open source library that does it!

Now if someone could please explain to me how to convert DD/DMS to UTM, that would be amazing!

    I'm Mr. Storm King..

Bull Hill (Mount Taurus) is a very nice hike too. Last Spring a buddy of mine and I climbed Bull Hill and descended into the valley with all the Cornish ruins. We made our way back towards the Hudson River just as the sun was setting, which I mentioned to my friend, looked "like a river of...

    Animals encountered on the trail?

The usual: moose, deer, black bears, coyotes, wild turkeys, grouse, pheasants, jay h, etc. Saw a ton of bears towards the end of summer here in Jersey. One refused to get off the trail I was hiking! Any lizards? Spotted a few black rat snakes. I met a guy on the trail last weekend who...

    Fir Mt. 10-31-08

Yeah, I also can't view the pictures. Kodak Gallery is a little bit annoying when it comes to sharing the gallery with everyone. In order to do this, you have to follow these steps: 1. Share the album with yourself, from the "Share Photos" tab, with your own email address in the "To"...

Nice, Ralph! Sounds like winter has definitely arrived early this year. Do you think the snow will last or will it melt before winter truly arrives?

    Schunemunk Mountain - 10/26/2008

After reading Bill and Judy's trip report from Schunemunk Mountain a few weeks back, I was inspired to head back and explore new parts of the ridge. I've approached the summit from the North and East so this time, I chose a South approach, via High Knob. The progression of biomes on Schunemunk...

Peak Foliage in an Old Cemetery

They're all technically nice shots except I have trouble finding the subject. My eye isn't really drawn to anything particular and it sort of just wanders around the photograph. If I were you, in #2 I would have crouched down in front of the nearest headstone and used that as an off-center...

North Dome and Sherrill - A confession

Nice trip report and good pics. Based on the pics, it looks like the Catskills are past peak already and some of the trees are even leafless. What a contrast from a week ago! Those cliffs on North Dome are mighty.

    BLM-Graham-Doubletop-Big Indian-Eagle-Balsam Traverse (10/11)

Let me preface by saying this was one heck of a day hike! Ralph, Jeff and I met up at the Rider Hollow trailhead at just after 7 AM and carpooled over to Millbrook Road where we would begin the epic hike. At about 7:30, we geared up and hit the trail, moving at a brisk 3 mph pace up BLM. The...

You know it has been to long since you last hiked... ...when thought of romping around hill and dale becomes strangely arousing. :o
