Possible Admission Fee increase at some National Parks

Generally about 50% of the fees for the fee "demonstration" program stays local. The increase of user fees is part of a strategy explicitly aimed at privatizing public lands. I'm okay with paying in. I'm not okay with privatization.

Somebody who doesn't know the 2017 is the issue date, not the expiration date?

    Franconia Notch parking survey

It is. I was involved in a Wikipedia edit war on this shortly after they changed the signs from "To 93" to "93". There's a portion of federal law that states all the requirements for Interstate highways (and the procedure for bringing noncompliant stuff up to snuff). It has an explicit statement...

    Caribou Valley/Pond Road

I can't help you with the gate, but reports of the last few years have been consistent that road conditions are only driveable to the "steel bridge" a mile or two before the crossing.

    Interesting Baxter State Park article

I'm not sure if there or Major makes me more nervous. I did drive through a bad one at the Hancock Overlook, where parking on both sides obscured the view of somebody pulling out of the lot and they got hit. Between this and the damage to the trails I do think we're actually in a usage crisis...

LOST: gaiters, Downes Brook TH, NH

Hah, I found them! The back seats of my car were folded up and I hadn't unfolded them until last week and boom!

FOUND: Hat on Isolation Trail, NH

Found a hat yesterday afternoon (9/30) on the east branch of the Isolation trail, about 0.1 mile down from the Davis Path junction at a nasty crawl-under blowdown. PM or email me a description and I'll get it back to you. I use gmail and my username there is jtniehof (like here, but with my...

    Welcome to Fall 2017 hiking

Regardless of the state of the leaves, the roads are full of people (largely, but not exclusively with Mass plates) driving slowly and without much attention--11 last weekend, 101 today. People should pretty much figure on leaf peeper traffic on everything but the freeways for the next while.

    Hiker Fatality on Lions Head

Part of the issue is that low-number Poisson statistics (which is what we're dealing with here) are really nonintuitive. Using sierra's number of 1-3 a year, if the average is 2, over ten years we'd see: 1 year with no fatalities 3 years with one 3 years with two 2 years with three 1 year with...

    Lightweight stiff shanked boots?

Depending on your definition of "low", the Vasque Grand Traverse might fit your bill. The sole is quite stiff and boot-like (I wear 12). They come in a 14; while not as breathable as trail runners, they're a lot more breathable than a full leather boot. They're moderate-to-low volume if you use...

    Bigelow tips and conditions?

I do think the north horn out and back is worthwhile.

Reminder - Last Fall Nascar Race this weekend at NHMS

They've had "expect heavy traffic" signs up as far away as the 11-28 rotary. I've got a Monadnock trip scheduled for Saturday; ugh, I'm going to be going right through it. EDIT: oh, good, race proper's Sunday. Equivalent of JoshandBaron's link...

    New Book on Kate M.

Having done my share of foxhunts (including one I "won" with just an HT and the body-nulling technique), I agree I can't see any obvious reason a ground search couldn't make use of the VHF homing signal. It may be interesting to try sometime (on 2m) and see how badly the signal gets...

    New Book on Kate M.

Per Ty's book, the CAP aircraft carrying the equipment was not able to get low enough for it to be effective. Apparently it works best 1000' or less AGL and the weather that day featured 1000' drop in downdrafts....

    New Book on Kate M.

Two really strong points (I read it in two sittings, and would have been one, but I had to go to bed): 1) The analysis and narrative are interwoven, which lets you see where things go wrong from the get-go. (And does a really good job of saying "yes, things did go wrong systematically, this...

    New AT Record

Anish's rules include "never enter a vehicle" and he was challenging under her rules. Note they do allow for spontaneous trail magic without prearrangement....I know someone who gave Stringbean some food in such a situation.

Start planning - 2024 Eclipse path runs over Katahdin

If you're lucky. I-35 from southern Iowa was down to one lane for construction. It look us about 5 1/2 hours from Sweet Springs back to Des Moines; Google says normally 3:30 (and some acquaintances who started back home an hour or so after us took about another 90 minutes). That ratio sounds...

    Public transportation to the trailhead

Trail Angels is another shuttle service that hasn't been mentioned. Basically figure on taking about a day in transit each direction; the bus schedules are somewhat awkward for hikers.

    New Book on Kate M.

Ty walked in with a boxful yesterday, signed. I grabbed one, as did my compatriot. I also picked up the 30th WMG and another book that might be of interest to people in this thread, Death in the White Mountains: Hiker Fatalities and How to Avoid Being One, by Julie Boardman, published by our old...
