    Edmands Path winter access

I wound up doing this yesterday. The walk from the Highland Center up to the trailhead took about 50min for 2.5mi, including two bathroom breaks (I start well-hydrated). Lots of foot and ski tracks on the trail, also some snomo, no people present by any means of transport. Gate was open but...

    Edmands Path winter access

The more I look at it the more it seems that Edmands isn't that popular, or even reasonable, a winter route. Looks like the out-and-back from the parking lot with the roadwalk is something like 10.6/3100' while out-and-back on Crawford Path is 9.6/3250'. Lots more above-treeline exposure but on...

    Edmands Path winter access

This feels like it should be an answered question but I haven't found much. Is there any reasonable winter parking near the Mt. Clinton Road/Base Road junction to have the shorter roadwalk in to Edmands Path, or is it necessary to walk up from the Crawford Connector parking lot? How heavy is...

    $10 Parking At Cog Station

So "access to the road along the track" indicates that the Cog is now okay with using their bridge and the cutover to access Jewell? That was pretty solidly fenced off at one point. As far as the FS fees covering plowing...my understanding was that NHDOT did all the trailhead plowing anyhow...

    Another rescue of the clueless

To be fair, the article doesn't actually specify the airports (just Toronto-NYC), but I thought that would be briefer. Apparently not :)

    Another rescue of the clueless

Resurrecting this thread. The new Appalachia is out (Winter/Spring 2018) and this one made Accidents. He'd flown YYZ-JFK, bus to Hanover, taxi to the Flume parking. So he didn't have a car to bail to. That certainly changes the equation a bit: trying to thumb a lift on the Parkway in the dark...

Notes on Wildcat from the ski area

I haven't seen anybody mentioning doing Wildcat from the ski area yet this winter, so some beta...the short is no real change from years past. The uphill route is either Polecat all the way (per this page) or Stray Cat-Middle Polecat-Catnap-Upper Polecat (this page). It isn't posted at the area...

    I need crampon suggestions

Second the Kahtoola KTS. I strongly recommend the steel version: holds a point better, and the points are 1" vs. 3/4" on the aluminum. I think they're consistently labeling the steel as KTS and the aluminum as K10 now, but their website is borked so I can't check.

Best Cities To Work And Live For Hiking

I would warn that it's going to be hard to make a living, particularly in retail, in the attractive outdoor towns...better be prepared to live like a broke 19 year old, because you'll be competing with them for jobs and housing. I've said for awhile you can't earn enough working in Taos to live...

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

I recall ten years ago the question of going straight to the trailhead (might be the old route of the trail?) vs. following the snomo out to Haystack Road was a discussion, and there was some question whether the direct route was acceptable to the landowners. Never changes, I guess.

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

I think $5/car? Pretty reasonable; if he wasn't there in the morning I think we left it under the windshield wiper. I believe Seven Dwarfs was actually open in winter then.

Ever needed two headlamps (or lights)?

One caution is that Black Diamond is starting to make lamps with a sealed bulb compartment but an unprotected battery compartment. So water will get in and ruin your batteries but the headlamp will work once you find new batteries and a hair drier to dry out the battery compartment. The Spot...

Ever needed two headlamps (or lights)?

Lower Cave, Carlsbad. I had the Park Service helmet + headlamp with brand spankin' new just purchased alkaline batteries, which is what they tell you to do, and also carried along my regular hiking headlamp with freshly charged rechargables, which they tell you not to do. The brand new alkalines...

    Woman shot while mountain biking

It looks like F&G is being unclear about whether the restriction on discharge within 150' of trails and 300' of developed recreation areas is a "best practice" or a "regulation". A deer slug can be effective at 100 yards and my cousin was shot at nearly 200 yards because somebody shot up at a...

    Boot and crampon selection help

Because everybody has to kvetch about plastics whenever the topic comes up, I'll throw in my data point that I'm very happy wearing them. Sure, they're heavy, and they don't "roll", but they're wicked supportive and have great traction. Never had a "shin bang" problem and I lace 'em pretty tight...

Economy Version Of Marmot DriClime Windshirt

We're trying to figure out what exactly it is about the DriClime that works for you so we can recommend something similar in the relevant parts of the design. You said in the first post you want "without the water repellent finish" but the DriClime has DWR.

    Wow - Black Pond "Bushwhack"

If you're an AMC leader, check in with your chapter if you're planning on leading Owl's Head...if you're not, and carry a guide card, presumably you've heard from the WMNF regarding your obligations. If you don't carry a guide card, either you don't need one and shouldn't worry, or you do need...

    Storm damage

Maybe not surprising. That was the site of a massive bark beetle infestation that had to be logged out and people tend to stamp out the area so stuff doesn't grow back in readily. It's a weak/susceptible part of the forest.
