“Many people do not know that mushroom identification is extremely difficult--not at all like identifying, say, trees. Does biking train one for hiking?

I came to the same conclusion many summers ago thinking I was in great shape for a traverse in the Squam Range because I had been biking regularly (and not hiking that Spring) and had to bail out way early from knee pain. Never again!

    Rare species

Rare species I was afraid to step in it because it looked like, well …. But looking closer I saw it was a plant. At 8 I couldn’t leave the yard. At 16 I didn’t have a car. At 21 I had no money. At 34 I had no babysitter. At 50 'father time' said it was too late. I said, “Eat my dust!”

    Past Peak(s)

I'm not disagreeing with you. I think the bumps for Shaw, Roberts and others look like they have been leveled. Thus the carriage turn-arounds on each. Here's a interesting quote: "The ring dike we see today is less than one-third of its original height, yet it stands out squarely from the...

    Past Peak(s)

That is possible but I don't think he would want to lower the elevation of his view from his house much. A lot of blasting and rock work was also done for all the carriage roads. This is one example of the amount used along the way:
