Zion National Park Trip - Looking for Advice

I would ditto everything else said. If you were so inclined, you could also look up a canyoneering trip with Zion Adventure Company. They also rent gear for The Narrows. Zion is a small park and all the places mentioned are the most popular spots. Just get an early start and you'll beat the...

Grand Canyon trip - looking for advice

Yes, winter will have significantly less visitors (even at the rim). However, if you are doing a rim to rim with a shuttle arrangement, you can't go in winter.

Grand Canyon trip - looking for advice

As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with Phantom Ranch. We've backpacked in the Grand Canyon twice and both times we've chosen to camp. 1) it's harder to get space for Phantom Ranch - you are competing with mule riders and a lot of hikers whose only option is PR since they don't backpack...

Grand Canyon trip - looking for advice

I've found that National Parks, and especially one as highly visited as the Grand Canyon, always err on the side of caution and are very conservative. Even with all their warnings, people get into trouble there every year - so can you imagine what would happen if they weren't so conservative...

Grand Canyon trip - looking for advice

We've never stayed in the cabins but twice have camped at Bright Angel campground. Both trips we've done one of the "classics" - down the South Kaibab trail, camped at Bright Angel Campground, up the Bright Angel trail (both times we broke up the hike out with a stay at Indian Garden). The...

Interested in forming a hiking group with 4-5 YO kids?

Too bad we aren't in NH or get up there more often - would love to join you! My daughter is 4.5 and I'm always on the look out for other hikers with kids. I'm slowly working on creating some new hikers with her current friends. :) We did a short 0.7 mile "hike" a few weekends ago followed by...

Phenomenal Alex Honnold - an amazing free soloing accomplishment

Alex's accomplishments are truly unbelievable. I wish he would just stop now so we aren't reading about his death at some point in the future. I used to rock climb quite a bit, and if you try to make a career out of free soloing it is just a matter of time. It could be something completely out...

Bob Marshall Traverse (ADK) - June 9

Well, I did Dial, Nippletop, Colvin, Blake, Skylight, Marcy, Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, and Gothics. Just couldn't make myself do Armstrong, UWJ and LWJ. My legs were perfectly fine, but I just plain didn't want to do the last 3. I was less efficient through Colvin, Blake, and up to...

    Switzerland this summer

Yes, if you want to save money, then camping will help with that. But what you decrease in cost, you increase in pack weight. I find the cost wasn't bad for making the hiking easier, as well as a hot meal, shower, and bed at the end of the day. :) If you are camping for a more "wilderness"...

    Switzerland this summer

We didn't do the Haute Route, but did do the Tour Mont Blanc. We rarely saw tents and when we did, they were often pitched near huts (I think near the huts are the only official places to camp - so it kind of defeats the purpose).

    Backpacking and contact lenses

I'm another one that uses daily disposables and brings glasses as backup. I like the disposables because I don't have to bother with a case or solution. Your friend might want to consider a small mirror if she needs help putting her contacts in and out (I never use one, but Steve does).

    Pyrenees Hike - Recommendations?

    Don't mess with Swans!

Crazy! A friend of mine was telling me about a friend of hers who was almost taken out by a heron on the Hudson River (and consequently won't kayak alone any more).

    Hiking in Montana

How long will you have and what time of year? The past three years (and again this year) we've flown into Billings and have spent time in the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone. I would highly recommend spending time in both - they are both beautiful and offer different things. Yellowstone...

    Arizona and Utah 2012

Excellent! I'm sure you're having a great time! Thanks! We entered the online lottery for Coyote Buttes North, but no dice. We didn't even bother in person. They have now moved the in person lottery to Kanab - so it's out of the way and if you don't get permits, you've wasted time that could...

    Arizona and Utah 2012

Our pictures and a few trip notes are posted here. This is the summary from our website and I've included some favorite pictures below. Thanks for looking! In March 2012, Steve, Norah, and I returned to the southwest for another fantastic trip through the canyons and rocks of northern Arizona...

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

I finished the book last night and really enjoyed it. I was appalled at how ill prepared she was for her hike, but have a lot of respect for her - what a tough cookie to do what she did without the preparation. I'm glad she "found" herself - seems like she's doing well now.

Has anyone else read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed?

Glad you liked it. It's sitting on my desk right now to be read after I finish my current book.
