picture of a huge bull moose

I was on Rocky Branch climbing up Engine hill on Saturday morning and we saw him too! We were about 25 feet away when he ambled away. Great picture! Nice to see the old fella again.

Osceola loop: Greeley Ponds, Osceola Trail and Tripoli Road

When I did this, it was winter and going up I saw a patch of blue sky. I thought I must be getting near the top but it was a false summit. For a "little" mountain, this part kicked my butt. I liked the old slide trail better than the new trail. Hope all went well with the Dr's :)

    Chocorua lost trail, Twin Sister?

Great map dr_wu, this couple is in their sixties and I'm guessing they last climbed this in the 1960's or 70's. She called it Three Sisters but he corrected her calling it Twin Sisters. I can't imagine looking on the map that there is a 2.5 mile route either. Roy, it might be the Middle...

    Chocorua lost trail, Twin Sister?

Has anyone heard of an old trail on Chocorua called Twin Sister? Speaking with an older couple last night, and they said it was on the back-side of Chocorua. Trail was supposed to be 2.5 miles to the summit and steep with lots of washouts. They thought it was gone with all the condominium...

Oakes Gulf 1969 plane wreck: the "Propeller"

I have seen the propeller a few times, the Zealand Croo stole it from Lakes on my last stay in a hut. I've thought about exploring Oaks someday.

    World's Worst Weather? Really?

Mt Washington can back it up right here: Weather Archive Check out January 14, 2004 when the temperature dipped to -44 with a windchill of over -100! Many many days when the wind blew more than 100-mph Freezing fog, blizzards, hurricane force winds are pretty normal If you can show me another...

    World's Worst Weather? Really?

Maybe another mountain should make the claim of Worlds worst weather and then we can compare side by side. Until that happens, Mt Washington gets that title and deserves it.

    Mount Mansfield to Camels Hump

Info from an outsider. Turns out kyle skaggs, 21, formerly of olympia, wa finished in 20:53 smashing the previous record just this past weekend.

    Maybe the Strangest Rescue Ever?

Just a couple of days ago, the summit had a high temp of 60 and yesterday one of the observers wrote that the windchills were around zero. Amazing how this mountain can go from summer to winter in such a short amount of time. I hope he recovers and wish him and his family best wishes.

The pair with the best views?

I believe the map is online at the Wildcats website. The trail begins near where the platform is on D.

The pair with the best views?

Doing the Wildcats, I like to go up Wildcat Ridge trail taking Lost Pond from Pinkham notch. Nice views as you go up the steep ridge, I agree with Steve, go down Polecat. The road-walk back to your car isn't bad. I like the Carter traverse going up the second Imp trailhead which has nice...

    Owl's Head

I found the new herd path more distinct this time, the Mt Beaver brigade has been in there cutting away blowdowns making it a little easier. I still think it's easier in the winter all the way around. So far, 2 or 3 GPS's I know of agree that the new summit is higher.

    Owl's Head

I'm not a skiier but with the rolling terrain around Black Pond, I bet it's great for that, especially going towards OH. Just watch out for branches. As I understand it, most XC'ers take the Wilderness trail out from Lincoln/Franc Brook because it's a nice flat-downhill ski.

    Owl's Head

Agreed, that would slog if you had to break trail. You could hide in the parking lot and wait for a large group to head out first ;) Or hike it on Sunday providing it doesn't snow Saturday night.

    Owl's Head

Sometimes in the winter it can actually be easier than in summer. With the Black Pond bushwhack, frozen crossings and a packed trail it can be quicker. Plus, Lincoln brook is particularly beautiful in winter.

    Owl's Head

Hi Kevin, nope, there was snow covering a couple of humps that day, I just stood on top of it and snapped. I think Bob (bob&geri) has a nice picture too. Having just come back from FOT48 and visiting the exact same spot, the view is just not the same in summer. From the new summit though...

    Hypothermia

I had a pretty good bout of it in early March hiking in the rain, temps around 38 degrees and windy. We hiked over both Kinsmans that day. Stupid of me to push it over both peaks, I paid for it that night as my body fought to regulate it's temperature. I doubt if I'd hike in the rain in...

Flags on the 48: Owl's Head (yes I stole the template)

With the rain coming down there was nothing like a cup of hot coffee on top of Owlshead, it was excellent :) MtPa is the best!

Flags on the 48: Owl's Head (yes I stole the template)

Great pictures SB and the captions though not terribly flattering to me are understood because I feel like I brought out the rain. This was hike #4 to Owlshead and the third time encountering rain. Hiking with me to Owlshead or the Hancocks is not recommended  Anyway, it was...

    ...when the lighting strikes...

We were on the Lincoln Brook trail coming down from Owlshead on Saturday when it got so dark that someone commented, "I'm about to pull my headlamp out." We could see some eerie orange and reds just like a sunset but it was only 3:00! It descended on us in a puff of cold wind then the rain and...
