How are conditions in the Waterville/Sandwhich area?

If you go from the Tripoli Road side you wouldn't need any traction. With the warm weather, the snowline has dropped. It's a moderate hike up with perhaps only one small icy area. If you go from this side, don't miss the little spur off-trail on the west side that leads to a nice view of the...

North Face Baltoro Boots HV 400

I used mine about 7 times last winter and used strap-on crampons without any problems or wear. I'll keep an eye on them, the crampons barely fit these wide monsters. I haven't had any experience with EMS returns.

    stabilicers vs. crampons

I haven't tried the Stabilicers yet. My Charlot Moser 6-point crampons work great for most terrain and I can't seem to wear them out (6 winters now.) When they wear out, I may switch over.

    Tripoli Road question

I did this in early May a few years ago, and once in winter. It's several miles from the Osceola Trailhead to the Waterville side. It's a nice walk but going from the trailhead back to the valley gate seems to take forever. Going from the valley side in winter, we made the mistake of...

    Colorado 14ers

Doing Grays and Torrey are a classic dayhike. Both peaks are 14ers and considered "easier 14ers." We encountered lots of snow and it was July.

    Loving Bird Story

It was a teenager, he thought a hawk had attacked him. We came on the bird only minutes after he kicked it.

    Loving Bird Story

Yep, I've been attacked a few times, usually just a peck at the ankles and some hissing. Sometimes people kick them as was the case with this poor guy

    Loving Bird Story

Great story. I think they were called Fools Chicken or something because you could approach then quite easily. I've had them peck at my ankles but never sit on my lap! They may not be the smartest bird out there.

Here comes the first real snow for the Whites!

I saw this too, warmer than average temps for the winter ahead but not as warm as last winter. El-Nino again

    low ice NH4Ks

Those are all good. Jackson is good, one little steep section at the end but not usually icy till November (easy to get around anyway.) Osceola from Tripoli would be another good choice. Great views on both.
