REALLY bad news - Governor's list of NY park closures

This is definitely not good! I used to work there and would definitely agree that it would be a shame to see such a fine program be eliminated.

    Chickadee question

    Woods mosquito headnet

I find that when the black flies are swarming AND biting, then it doesn't matter who makes the head net - as long as I remembered to bring it, I'm happy.

    Microspikes vs. StabilIcers

Check out a poll I posted on ROT a while ago: "Stabilicers or Microspikes?" My vote: No comparison - Stabilicers do not grip slippery spots OR stay attached to your boots nearly as well as Microspikes - get a pair of 'spikes on sale and you will not regret it.

What kind of tree is this?

I concur - one of my favorite hiking poles was made from a dead, dry striped maple branch that I took off of a fallen tree.

What kind of tree is this?

It is also known as "moose maple" ... and "hunter's helper" as its leaves, like those of the hobblebush, are large and strong enough to be used as toilet "paper". Another interesting fact is that it has photosynthetic bark - aka it produces food for the plant as well as protects it.
