    Sledding

The first time I ever slid down a hiking trail on a sled was coming down the Blueberry Ledge trail on Mt. Whiteface on a Wham-o Air Slick ...in the dark. It was late January of '08 and there was a deep base, covered by 18 inches of fresh powder that had been tramped out into a virtual luge track...

    Head lamps

Where'd you get this info? This .pdf published by Black Diamond says: ◆ Use AA alkaline batteries or the Black Diamond NRG Battery Kit which includes a rechargeable NiMH unit. ◆ Do not mix old and new batteries or batteries of different types. - Has anyone used the NRG Batteries? Any...

No, actually - just bad research. BUT - to quote Tim Seaver from another Views thread:

    Head lamps

Some discussion here . On my Christmas list I asked for either the Mammut Lucido TX1 (It was $59.00 on sale) or Black Diamond Icon - (It was $52.00 on sale) due to the fact that they both had a long-range beam option and ran on AAA's (I'm planning on either using rechargable NIMH or disposable...

    De-"mist"ifying Vapor Barrier Gloves/Mittens

I'd like to keep this thread devoted to the topic "at hand" (Vapor Barrier related discussion) and not get into a debate about whose system is better and the flaws in eachothers'... but admittedly, that is a weak point in my system. 2 quick thoughts about exposing my bare hands- 1: Unless it's...

    De-"mist"ifying Vapor Barrier Gloves/Mittens

Hi all, Would someone(s) please explain: 1: Basic vapor barrier theory with regards to keeping hands warm/dry and 2: How/which part of my hike I might use vapor barriers to improve my layering system for keeping my hands warm and dry? Here is what I currently do to keep my hands warm...

    Mittens for really cold hands

I find that in order to deal with the amount of heat I produce on a hike up a mountain in the winter it is essential to layer my hands, upper body, and head. On the ascent I find that wool works best. Sweaty, damp fleece just doesn't keep my hands as warm as sweaty, damp wool. Ragwool mittens...

    Hike with the pup, suggestions?

Chester is a german shepherd/lab puppy and did the Hale + Zealand Falls loop - 8.2 miles when he was 5 months. He passed out @ the top of Hale (which has almost no view in case you didn't know). He has done a handful of close to 10 mile hikes and regularly runs 2-5 miles w/my wife, and seems to...

Potential wind problems on Saturday, 10/31/09

I was thinking East-ish as well due to a sunrise picture I took up there too. (But I can't guarantee that I took it from the actual shelter and not off to the side to avoid trees). Sidenote: it was probably the best solo overnight trip of my life - I had the whole shelter (and virtually the...

    Surprise from Eddie Bauer

I find a heavyweight fleece pant to be a bit more versatile (breathe-ability wise), albeit a bit less packable - for sleeping while winter camping, under shell layers for downhill skiing or walking the dog, etc... and a lot more affordable than down or Primaloft - although if I had the cash, or...
