Mountain Jam, Denali Sendoff, Big Bonfire Bash

Thanks for thinking of the VFTT Denali Team, but unfortunately most of us will be in California that weekend training on Mt. Shasta. :( We are going to miss an awesome time! Even though we are not going to be able to hear the band play, we should have no problem seeing UFC’s gigantic bonfire! :D

Mt. Abraham Traverse (Barnjum-W. Kingfield Rd) 16-17Feb08

Trail Conditions: Followed well packed snowmobile trails for 7 miles from Barnjum to our camp spot at 2700’ (below the col between Middle Abraham and Abraham). The next day we followed a snowmobile trail (broken about ½ way) to the col between the 2 peaks. From there it was all above treeline...

    Rope-a-dope on Rainier/Hood

Personally, I like to use 9mm+ ropes for glacier travel. 8mm is borderline in my opinion... But, for the standard routes up Hood and Rainier you would likely be fine...

Beta on Whitecap and North Kennebago Divide

Last winter, we drove down Tim Pond Rd to the junction of Canada Rd (at the bottom of Little Kennebago Lake). Since there were 2 major snow storms within the last 10 days which resulted in about 4+ feet of powder, there was some serious trail breaking (good thing there were 8 of us!). :D We...

Old Speck From Grafton in winter?

I concur with Mohamed. I parked there 9 days ago and not only was the road in great shape, the parking lot was plowed enough for 30+ vehicles...

    Coe & S. Brother via Tote Rd/Marston/Coe Slide/Mt Coe Trail (1-27-08)

Trail Conditions: Tote Rd had great ski conditions. Marston trail had a foot of powder over a 3 foot consolidated base. Coe Slide had lots of ice down the middle, but mostly snow and rock along the sides. Mt Coe Trail between Coe and S. Brother had about a foot of snow over a deep consolidated...

Beta on Whitecap and North Kennebago Divide

I can't confirm this, but I highly doubt it. I was last in that area 4 weeks ago, and Tim Pond Rd wasn't safely drivable with 4WD let alone Canada RD and Bear Brook Rd. Last winter when we did White Cap and NKD, the closest we could drive to those peaks was the junction of Tim Pond Rd and Canada...

    Frostbite prevetion = Good

When my hands or feet get cold, I look at adding a layer to my body or head to keep my core temp up. When the body's core temp goes down, the first thing the body does is conserve heat by minimizing blood flow to the extremities, which is why it is possible to get frostbite while not having any...

West and East Baldpate via the AT (1-19-08)

Trail Conditions: Trail was broken out to the Table Rock spur, but after that it was 6 inches of powder over a consolidated base. Above tree line it was mostly rock with lots of water ice. Special Equipment: We wore snowshoes all the way to the col between W&E, and we bare booted it from there...

    Winter Gathering??

I plan on being there for Saturday night (hiking Saturday, and driving home with a massive hangover on Sunday) . I will also be camping at Barnes in my 5 season tent, the back of my 4Runner... Even though not many people posted whether or not that they will be there, my estimate will be...

    Into Thick Air...

Mohamed wrote: how did you do Frissell? For Frissell, we parked at the Bear Mountain Trailhead on Rt 41 and did a 10 mile loop over Round Mt, to Frissell, down the Conn HP, then up and back around and over Bear Mt and down. Those were interesting peaks with great views! On the way down we even...

    Into Thick Air...

For the past several months, Arm and myself have been planning the adventure of a lifetime. We wanted to summit Jerimoth Hill (812 feet, 247M), the mightiest peak in all of Rhode Island, but we also decided to do it in a more challenging manner than most. We discussed everything from riding 1880...

The passing of a member of our hiking family.................

Sad news indeed.... Neil, All I have to say is my heart goes out to you and your family in this unfortunate time. I also want to thank you for bringing Dominic up with the passion for the outdoors, which is what I define a "truely living" and not just existing in life... He was one hell of a...

    Hancock's via Cedar Brook/Arrow Slide/Hancock Loop (1-6-08)

Trail Conditions: Trails looked like someone went thru them with a snow blower... Special Equipment: Snowshoes used for traction on the well broken trails and for the bushwhack to and from the Arrow Slide. On the slide, we used crampons and ice axes. Comments: We were hoping for a little more...

    Redington via CVR (12-30-07)

Conditions: The road is unplowed from RT 27, but there are parking spaces for about 8 vehicles (just leave some room for the snowmobiles) :) . Nice snowmobile tracks all the way to about a mile from the summit, which make for awesome skiing! The last mile had some minor trail breaking, with...

    Madison/Adams/Jefferson via Valley Way/Gulfside/Jewell Trails

Madison/Adams/Jefferson via Valley Way/Gulfside/Jewell Trails (12-26-07) Trail Conditions: Valley Way had mostly hardpacked snow with some occasional soft areas, along with about 5-6 blowdowns. Above treeline was a combination of rock, styrofoam snow, and some ice. Jewell Trail was exactly as...

    Winter Record Attempt 12/22 - 12/31

He had a stellar day to do a Presidential Traverse :) Unfortunatly, due to a time constraint I was only able to do the 1st half with him, but we had spectacular weather! 25 down, 23 to go...

    Crawford, Stairs, Resolution 12-15-2007

Nice report! So where was LL? :) Those are a few "sweet" peaks to do in winter conditions, especially Crawford and Resolution. Good thing the NYPD (New York Policy Dept.) wasn't around when you dropped your packs. BTW, did you find a cannister on the true summit of Resolution?

    Hot Vs Cold Water

I concur with NH_Mtn_Hiker (mostly) on this one (and Mohamed) Based on Newton's 2nd law of Thermodynamics, colder masses will reach ambiant temperature before hotter ones (as what Mohamed mentioned). Occasionally this doesn't apply (not in theory, but in certain applications). If you fill a...
