Hiking, Scrambling, Climbing and Skiing New Slides

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a jerk! :o I was, however, in a rush and didn't get to expand. I would suggest that all sorts of combinations of snow layers and all types of slabs can produce slides, and that it's prudent to be on the lookout any time there is the correct slope angle, cohesive...

This is a dangerously incomplete understanding of avalanches.

Mahoosuc area loop - Day hike or short backpack ideas?

Goose Eye and Mahoosuc Notch can be very readily combined into a rugged dayhike or a more leisurely 2-day hike. All while accessing from the east. You just need to look at the topo map. It's pretty obvious: http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=44.53170,-70.95984&z=14&t=T Hint: Wright Trail --> Goose...

That is probably blue flag iris (Iris versicolor), or maybe the non-native yellow iris (Iris psuedocorus). They're both found in wetland habitats.

    GMNF Closed

To reiterate what Tim said, both the Burrows/Forest City trailhead and the Monroe trailhead for Camel's Hump are inaccessible. Here's a good link that might be useful: http://www.vtfpr.org/resource/RoadsandTrails.cfm

Also Michael J -- and I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned this yet -- APA format is required. Thanks.

    NPR/Fresh Air interview w/Hugh Herr

This paragraph three? I happened to catch the show by chance today, and this does not apply. There was nothing heroic in the presentation of his accident.

    WMNF Northeast Swift Comment Period

Also, it takes large old trees to naturally decay and fall down into streams, and there haven't been very many of those around for the past 100 years.

KDT - I'm pretty sure your fern is Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea). I wouldn't want to eat those fiddleheads... or those of Bracken Fern (the Pteridium) Great photos all around!

A small quibble: I've never heard anyone describe northern Maine as "roadless".

    Best Burlington area night-time adventures?

Once the weather warms, there are several excellent rock climbing (mostly sport) spots around Bolton. These are about 30 minutes from Burlington. At least one of the spots, Bolton Quarry, has some ice too I think, but I've never been there in winter.

Mt Prospect: Trying Some New Equipment.

Sometimes the bottom of the pot can heat up and burn before the snow starts to melt. Starting with some water in the bottom of the pot will prevent this, and also substantially speed up the process of melting the snow.

    Choosing BC Skis

Whoa, there is way too much over-thinking and nostalgia going on in this thread. Let's establish a simple set of recommendations for people new to backcountry skis, based on gear widely used in the last decade, divided into three scenarios: 1) You are absolutely certain you just want to...

Hike Mansfield on Friday, Feb. 4th?

On the spectrum of Vermont backcountry skiing, the Teardrop is not elusive. You should get a winter map of Mount Mansfield, as either of those will show it. For example: http://www.mapadventures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=24 It is also described in David...

Hike Mansfield on Friday, Feb. 4th?

You can skin up the LT from 108 right up to treeline. Watch out for skiers coming down when you're near Chin Clip. Sunset Ridge is a great snowshoe trip, but I would not want to skin up it. The Teardrop Trail is an easy skin, but will put you up on the south end of the ridge, about 1.5 miles...
