Comprehensive trails map to Mink Hills?

There are quite a few nice trails in the Mink Hills. The yellow trail you mentioned goes from Rt. 114 up to the top of Windsor Ward Peak. There are several other nice trails near there. The Chandler Reservation over in Warner has a number of trails and the poor map you saw on line. Stewart's...

    Historic trails on Mt. Sunapee

A short update on this trail. As of 10/15/1015 the "Lake Solitude" sign has been removed and all of the blazes along the trail have been painted over with "Government, all hiding grey". The trail is still in good shape, except for at the very top where brush was piled in the entrance to the...

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

TJsName said: "This is not to imply that there is no risk, but only to put that risk in perspective. RADIATION is dangerous - around 10,000 people die each year from skin cancer." Although people surely die from skin cancer, it is usually due to the ultraviolet RADIATION from the sun...

    GPS Questions Part 2

This is a bit off topic but it is a GPS reading that you don't see very often. The waypoint was captured at the location shown but the photo was taken later in camp. Note: the Garmin GPSmap 76CSX will not permit manually loading in the N90 location, I tried. It will allow 89Deg, 59 Min 59.9...

    GPS Questions Part 2

I have found that the accuracy of the GPS track is often reduced by poor satellite reception. The newer GPS units from Garmin have better antennas and something called a SiRF receiver. I currently use a GPSmap76Cx unit which is far better than the GPSmap76S that I started with. That said, I...

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

I have seen bears, moose, a bobcat, mink, beavers, etc and many birds The rarest, at least for me was a Spruce Grouse that was on the Baldface Circle Trail between the N and S summits. It let us walk to within a few feet of it before it walked off into the scrub.

    Blue berries are ripe

I hiked up the Banana trail from Canaan Road to Mt Shaw on Sunday. The blueberries on Big Ball Mtn. (also know as Blueberry ridge) are big, ripe and numerous. There was also a big bear happily eating his share. The trail is in good shape and if you haven't been there, it is a beautiful hike.

WMNF GIS trails data - GPX

Thanks Kimball. Last Saturday I went to North Moat Mtn. via the Moat Mtn. Trail from Diana's Baths and back down the Red Ridge Trail. I was pleasantly surprised to find that when I superimposed my GPS track on top of your .GPX data, that they were the same. With the lack of maintenance that is...

SAR: Patient wanders away from rehabilitation facility

Hopefully, if I ever get put in a "facility" there will be the opportunity to "walk away". Even with only pajamas would be OK.

    REI Changes Its Warranty Policy

My experience with the LL Bean Outlet Store in Concord has been very good. I had a LL Bean jacket of unknown age on which the plastic zipper had died. I took it back to the store because of the published warranty and not because the jacket owed me anything. The jacket was perfect, except for the...

Get ready for Rescue Fees to be back in the news

Maybe the best way to deal with the Fish and Game, S&R budget short fall ( short of being alert and planning for the unthinkable) is to plan a hike, get the latest forecast (in print), carry a GUMMIT generated map, an accurate compass, and get lost, because the trails are not maintained. We...

    Black Flies

Here in southern NH (Henniker) the black flies have pretty much cancelled hiking in the woods for me. If you use DEET and keep moving fast you are OK but you won't stop to look at the views for long. Also, as mentioned here before, there are plenty of ticks out too. I have gotten two confirmed...

Huge group hike planned Franconia Ridge.

Be careful what you wish for. I have visited a number of great hiking destinations that were under the full control of "THE MAN". Do you really want to let the forest service dictate how many people can go to any particular trail or area? Do you want to be stopped on the trail to show your...

    Old Man - 10 years ago - May 3, 2013

If it had to fall, I am glad it happened at night. Many climbers have enjoyed the climb known as Lake View and especially the final pitch up the corner on the south side of the old man's head. I always found the flake a bit stiff for a 5.5. If The Old Man had fallen on a nice day, there probably...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

Hi Red Oak, In the past couple of years Chocorua Forestlands have logged almost every stick big enough to load on a truck on their Ossipee properties. To avoid my getting into politics, which IS heavily involved in this whole mess, perhaps you would like to take an aerial tour of the place...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

Red Oak said: Any updates on the legal status of this sandpit? hopefully it is closed to the public,so kids can not go up there and party it up and trash the area.[please no more negative email on this topic/related topic.thanks!] Ok, I have not seen the latest agreement between the State...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

From what I have seen from the air, nothing much has changed at the sandpit. There is a big steel gate across Gilman Valley Road that prevents people from driving into the pit area. I doubt any kids would hike the distance from the gate to the pit to party. There are lots of other sandpits in...

NH State Forests and WMA Logging

It seems to me that there has been a big increase in recent years in logging activities on public lands managed as State Forests and Wildlife Management Areas. This activity seems to coincide with the recent period of shortfalls in tax revenues in the state. I was wondering where the money goes...

    Chocorua Champney Falls

My favorite loop on Chocorua is going up the Piper Trail , turn right to Nickerson Ledge, to Carter Ledge, over the Sisters to Chocorua and down the Hammond Trail to the Weetamoo Trail, to the Piper Trail and back to the point of beginning. Ok, this off topic for the Champney Falls Trail but it...

    Want to kill a bear?

I have had some experience with gardening and the never ending battle with wild animals. I admit that my half acre+ of vegetables is a hobby and I will probably still survive if the various varmints eat everything. Bears have never been a problem but anyone who has had a garden in New England...
