    Ways to Hike the 48

I have taken a little liberty with the "Hike" part of this thread. On Sunday I went by air and visited all of the 4000 footers. Total elapsed time was 48 Min, 14 sec. Ok, I know I wasted fossil fuel, and perhaps disturbed the peace and quiet of the wilderness, but the views were great. I think...

    Google map

You will find that the positional accuracy of features on Google, and other aerial photo sources depends on the steepness of the terrain. All the photos are computer corrected using a digital elevation model. This leads to errors in steep areas, and around mountain tops, but is very good where...

    Wilderness Trail - Spurious Signage

This latest sign reminds me of climbing an easy route (Cat in the hat) out in Red Rocks near Las Vegas. The route was seeming really hard for the guide book grade and I came to a sign scratched in the rock that said "NOT CAT"

Arcadia Cracks Down on Rock Thieves

I wonder where the "landscaper" gets the smooth rounded rocks that he sells. I recently had some ***** steal a truck load of granite foundation stones from my property. (The stones came from an old barn that I tore down on my property). The thieves came with a big backhoe and truck in the middle...

Arcadia Cracks Down on Rock Thieves

I think the school teachers from Florida are a threat that needs to addressed. If something is not done immediately, they may steal enough rocks from Mt Washington, that it will no longer be the highest in the North East. They may also be stealing branches and deer antlers! Very serious indeed.

    NH Campsite Tax

Perhaps campground operators will be bright enough to charge an "Entrance fee". It costs "X" dollars to come through the gate. You can also purchase a multi day "Pass" or a "Season Ticket". They don't charge for a camp site. If we don't fight back against the ever expanding government, who will...

    NH Campsite Tax

I wonder what will happen if we just camp but don't pay? They can't afford to keep the prisoners that they already have. Hey, three hots and a cot ain't all that bad.

    Ways to Hike the 48

I am working on doing the list in the shortest time and will have a full report, with time and date stamped photos. Better weather is required.

Weekend With the Wife - No Kids

With the weather that we have been having, I would opt for something out West. The Desolation Wilderness above Lake Tahoe is nice.

    Remembering Starr King

It is important to remember Ronald Regan, the governor, as many of the people of California do. I had the great experience of hiking for a month on the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mt Whitney to Lake Tahoe. A couple of times, I actually went through a populated palce. People there were very...

    early alpine flowers?

Although lady slippers are not really an alpine flower, I have seen a lot more of them this year than I have seen in a long time. Maybe it is because of all the rain. The trillium and jack-in-a-pulpits seem to have gone by, at least in the lowlands.

    Old AMC and GMC guidebooks

Hi, I have a 1966 AMC WMG (18th edition) that I bought on E-Bay for some research that I was doing on old trails in the Ossipee Mountains. It has all the maps included and is in great shape. I don't think the owner ever took it on a hike. I think I paid something like $20.00 for it. If you just...

    WODC Outlook, May 2009

Again, MrChomp, Your post originally seemed to say that the Larcom issue was due in part to illegal clearing. To my knowledge, that is not true. Since it has been proposed that this discussion is about two separate issues, the map and illegal clearing, perhaps this thread should stick to the...

    WODC Outlook, May 2009

Hi all, perhaps it would be good to remember how all this dialog got started. Mr. Conrad has a news letter to put out. When I contacted him about the most recent WODC article, he replied: ( I needed to fill "The Outlook" and your map is relevant to a trail maintenance organization.) Ok , he can...

    WODC Outlook, May 2009

One more point about land owners that I would like to share: In general, they don't respond, at least in the Ossipee Mountains region. This is an observation by me. I have had reports from a number of other people that have tried to get permission to show trails in the Ossipees, on a map or in a...

    WODC Outlook, May 2009

Thanks to all who are researching the access problems. In NH, there is a 20% additional deduction in the appraised value of the owner's current use land if he specifically allows recreational use of the land. This includes hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. I don't think it allowes 4 wheelers...

    One saw one hiker

It does my heart good to know that people are out hiking the trails, doing their part. If you do bring along a saw to "help", keep in mind the width of the original trail. There is no need for a highway. Brush shouldn't hang in your face, but if you cut it, cut branches next to the tree trunk...

    WODC Outlook, May 2009

About the map: I think that anybody that looks at the Ossipee Mountain Map that I have put together, will find that I have shown "What is out there". I have only shown as trails, tracks that are blazed, maintained, and regularly used as hiking trails. The only "trail" that is shown that there...
