I usually include what I'm wearing and my planned bail routes (should I need them). My "call out the calvary" times vary. If I'm out with my little MooseMaiden, they're allowed to start worrying about 5 hours after my expected time back, but aren't to call out SAR until 12 hours. If I'm out...

True - but I'm also fortunate in that I very rarely experience much, if any, swelling before, during, or after a hike :)

Believe it or not, you may actually be drinking too much water. The rule of thumb that I've seen (especially from thru-hiking guides/info books) is that you should have to take a bio-break about every 4 hours or so.

I don't take any pain relievers when I hike and generally don't need to take them after a hike either. As others have said, pain is the body's way of saying something's going wrong and I want to be able to hear it so that I can be hiking well into my years.

If you're looking for a fairly easy (relatively speaking) hike out, how about Valley Way off of Madison?
