A Weekend in Acadia National Park

Happy birthday (that was a nice gift idea). Acadia is a blast, we're heading up next week, can't wait. Thanks for the timely photos and report.

    New WMNF Trail Status Page

I'd be coming in from Campton. I only drove all the way through to Sandwich once several years ago. It was an interesting drive, but I haven't felt the urge to repeat it. Sorry for the thread drift, the new trail status page is very helpful these days.

    Lost climber on Rumney Rattlesnake

That is terribly sad. So sorry to hear about it.

    New WMNF Trail Status Page

Thanks TDawg, that's good to know. I was hoping to get out to Black Mountain Pond sometime this fall but had about given up on the idea after the storm.

Yes, There is Hiking on Martha's Vineyard

Nice sunset photo ! I've never been to MV, but have hiked around on Block Island in RI. It's obviously very different from the mountains, but still a very enjoyable way to spend a day hiking.

    Fot48 - South Twin

I don't recall what year it was (2003?), but two friends and I carried a small flag up the Mt. Garfield Trail for Fot48. At the junction with GRT, we met MichaelJ and his hiking partner who were carrying a large flag to the summit. We helped them set up and hoist the flag atop the old...

    Walter Newton Natural Area ?

Does anyone know where this nature preserve is in the Plymouth area ? I've heard there is a gentle trail to a waterfall there, but can't find directions to the TH. I'd like to try some flat, easy hiking and see how my back holds up. Thanks.

Mt. Rainier 7.19.11 via Disappointment Cleaver + other adventures

Wow ! Thanks for sharing, those are spectacular photos ! Great shot of Multnomah Falls, too (the only one of your incredible scenes that I've been fortunate enough to witness myself). I really hope I can get back to the NW some day.

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I was fortunate to have hiked the Mist Trail in Yosemite. There were warnings and barriers near the tops of both Vernal and Nevada Falls, and numerous people in the water above the falls at both places. We actually finished our lunches very quickly and left the area above Nevada Falls because...

    Looking For Some Ideas

I've been forced to stop hiking this year due to back issues. I have degenerative disc disease and it finally caught up to me this winter. The best I can do now is to shuffle along very slowly on flat ground for 1-2 miles. The only "next step" under consideration at present is an eventual...

Thanks John. I'm a lifelong RI'er but I've never heard of those beaches. My hike on Block Island actually went by Clayhead. The beach below it was beautiful. Some of that walk would be underwater at high tide, I believe, but my wife and I made it with no problem, all the way back to town...

Hi John. What are the other 2 great beach walks in RI ? I'm just curious. I once hiked on Block Island from the north light to Old Harbor, the best beach walk I've ever taken.

Smarts and Drakes Brook Trail Maintenance

I frequently hike on the Smarts Brook Trail, in combination with some of the other short connecting trails, to make a nice 3 to 4 mile loop on the days we drive home. We've also hiked it to the top a number of times. One of my favorite hikes last year was up Algonquin and down Smarts Brook...

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

I grabbed my boots from the closet early one morning and wore sneakers for the long drive to the trailhead. I didn't realize I had grabbed two left boots until I'd already put on the first one. I received some funny looks that day hiking in one boot and one sneaker. Now I keep my old backup...
