My first year participating in the flags event. It was a great day! Spotted a car at 7 at the North Twin TH. Shuttled over to Gale River trail and headed out shortly thereafter. We met up with someone from the Galehead crew and his dog and we all hiked together until we split at the hut. Our group continued up the Twinway to South Twin and the flag was up by noon. We had many visitors over the course of the afternoon some friends, some thru-hikers, someone doing a pemi loop, someone doing an out and back of Galehead over the twins, everyone seemed to be in great spirits. Around 2, we paid respects (with a wonderful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner by MichaelJ and others), took the flag down and headed off on the North Twin spur. On the way down we observed some damage to the North Twin trail at the water crossings (they are different now), the trail is diverted in places to avoid washouts, but it is passable.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful memorial!

Thank you for the wonderful trip report and photos!

I'd like to also thank everyone who joined us on South Twin: our team of Rolly, Ken, Peter, Jacob, Sabrina; the visitors at flag-raising time who were of such great help: Paul, Ponytail Dave, and others whose names I didn't get; and all the visitors throughout the afternoon. It was a really nice memorial.

Some highlights were all the help with getting the flagpole up in the wind, the helicopter flyby, the dogs enjoying the hike up with the gentleman heading to Galehead and his dog Alaska, those chocolate and pretzel treats, seeing Meri, Seema, Brian, Nancy, & Chris, and of course...

Remembering all those affected by 9/11.

I don't recall what year it was (2003?), but two friends and I carried a small flag up the Mt. Garfield Trail for Fot48. At the junction with GRT, we met MichaelJ and his hiking partner who were carrying a large flag to the summit. We helped them set up and hoist the flag atop the old foundation, and then he surprised us with a fine version of the Star-Spangled Banner. That guy can sing !
